King James wording
King James Version
And when they were gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret.THE KEY
The crossing does not end in open water; it ends in a named place, on ground.
THE MEANING
You are carried in the verse all the way from crossing to arrival: the water is behind you, and there is ground beneath you. Γεννησαρέτ (Gennēsaret, Gennesaret) is commonly linked with Hebrew כִּנֶּרֶת (Kinneret), sometimes associated with כִּנּוֹר (kinnor, “lyre” or “harp”), though the place-name’s derivation is uncertain.
THE ROOT
διαπεράσαντες
diaperasantes
GROWS FROM
περα-
pera-
To pass across or through, reaching the far side.
“crossed over” in this verse is diaperasantes. The verb names more than movement across water: it carries the crossing through to arrival. English can make “gone over” sound like a passing detail, but the Greek puts the completed crossing at the center of the sentence.
ALSO GROWS
perao: Pass across; cross over.
περάω
This verb is the simple form behind the passage’s compound verb for crossing.
peran: Beyond; on the other side.
πέραν
This related form names the far side as the point reached through crossing.
γῆν
gēn
GROWS FROM
γῆ / γεω- (gē / geō-)
Earth, ground, land.
“land” in this verse is gēn. The word makes the destination tangible: the crossing ends with ground that can be entered and stood upon. The sentence moves from passage through water to arrival on earth.
ALSO GROWS
geōrgos: Farmer; worker of the earth.
γεωργός
This word joins the same earth-root to work, showing ground as something that can be cultivated.
geōrgia: Cultivation; agriculture.
γεωργία
This related word carries the earth-root into the growth that ground can receive.
THE PATTERN
A passage through water reaches its far side, where there is ground to stand on.
And the children of Israel came into the midst of the sea on the dry ground, and the waters were a wall to them, on their right hand and on their left. When you cross through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not kindle upon you. Then they willingly received him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land whither they went.THE THREAD
And stepping into a boat, he crossed over and came into his own city.“Passed over” translates the same Greek crossing verb found in this verse. In both, crossing is completed by coming into a place: here, Gennesaret; there, his own city.
