This verse in the King James

King James wording
And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him.

Being brought to help and being healed are not the same event.

The verse names a real limit: bringing someone for help does not guarantee healing. You can witness care meet an ability it does not have; the outcome is not secured by the act of bringing.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that reaching the right helper guarantees a cure.

θεραπεῦσαι

therapeusai

GROWS FROM

θεραπευ-

therapeu-

To attend to or serve; in medical use, to treat or heal.

“heal” in this verse is therapeusai. The Greek word for healing belongs to a family that also speaks of attending and care. The verse holds those ideas together: healing is work of attending to someone, yet even that care can reach a limit.

ALSO GROWS

therapeia: Attendance or service; also treatment or healing.

θεραπεία

The related noun keeps service and healing within one word family, opening a shade of care beneath “cure.”

therapeutēs: An attendant or one who serves.

θεραπευτής

This related word makes visible the attending within the verb for healing.

Healing may be carried through people, but its source is not their possession.

He mends the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.
Psalm 147:3 · SDVHealing is presented as an act that reaches both inward hurt and visible wounds.
And Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him, and the child was healed from that very hour.
Matthew 17:18 · SDVThe following verse shows healing arriving after the disciples’ inability.
Then Peter said, Silver and gold I have none, but what I have I give you. In the nature of Jesus the Anointed One of Nazareth, rise up and walk.
Acts 3:6 · SDVHealing passes through Peter’s words, while its power is named in Jesus.
Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to heal diseases.
Luke 9:1 · SDV

Luke uses the same Greek healing verb, ⁨θεραπεύω⁩ (therapeuō, to treat or heal), for the work entrusted to the Twelve. The shared word holds the tension in view: the work is named, yet Matthew’s verse records a moment when they cannot carry it through.
