This verse in the King James

King James wording
When his disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, Who then can be saved?

The question asks who can be brought out, exposing deliverance as something no one can manufacture for themselves.

When what you depend on cannot secure you, this question rises: who can be brought out? The verse gives the shock a voice and places deliverance beyond human control. It speaks to the point where capacity ends and the need to be rescued becomes clear.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that enough status or resources can make a person self-sufficient enough to avoid needing deliverance.

σωθῆναι

sōthēnai

GROWS FROM

σῴζω

sōzō

To rescue, deliver, or bring safely through.

“delivered” in this verse is sōthēnai. The verb is passive: the disciples ask who can be brought through, not who can rescue themselves. Its word family names both ⁨σωτηρία⁩ (sōtēria), deliverance, and ⁨σωτήρ⁩ (sōtēr), a deliverer, turning the question toward who can accomplish the rescue.

ALSO GROWS

sōtēria: Deliverance, rescue

σωτηρία

It names the act the disciples wonder is possible at all.

sōtēr: Deliverer, rescuer

σωτήρ

It shifts attention from the person’s ability to escape toward the one who can bring them through.

Deliverance comes from beyond the capacity of the one who needs it.

Deliverance belongs to the LORD; your blessing is upon your people. Selah.
Psalm 3:8 · SDVDeliverance is named as belonging to the LORD, beyond the reach of human possession.
For by favor you have been delivered through leaning your full weight, and this is not from yourselves; it is the gift of God.
Ephesians 2:8 · SDVThe verse locates deliverance outside the recipient’s own making.
For everyone who calls upon the nature of the LORD will be delivered.
Romans 10:13 · SDVThe one in need calls out to another as the source of deliverance.
And she will bring forth a son, and you will call his name Jesus, the LORD's deliverance, for he will deliver his people from their missing.
Matthew 1:21 · SDV

Matthew 1:21 uses the same verb family: ⁨σώσει⁩ (sōsei), “he will deliver.” His name ⁨יֵשׁוּעַ⁩ (Yēshūaʿ, deliverance) carries that work in its nature, so the question of who can be brought out opens toward the one named by deliverance.
