This verse in the King James

King James wording
But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able.

Jesus answers a request for honor by naming its hidden terms: sharing his place means entering his cup and his immersion.

You can ask to share in honor without seeing what that share contains. Jesus places a cup to drink beside an immersion to enter, two images of being drawn fully into his ordeal. “We are able” comes before the full weight of the request is visible.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the belief that closeness to Jesus brings honor while leaving the cost of his path untouched.

βαπτισθῆναι

baptisthēnai

GROWS FROM

βαπτιζ-

baptiz-

To immerse, dip, or submerge.

The Greek word carries the image of being immersed, not merely touched by water. Beside the cup Jesus drinks, it makes the question one of entering fully into what he faces.

ALSO GROWS

baptisma: An immersion or baptism.

βάπτισμα

The shared word-family makes clear that Jesus speaks of entering an experience, not watching it from outside.

baptistēs: One who immerses or baptizes.

βαπτιστής

This branch keeps the image concrete: immersion means being put beneath and surrounded by what one enters.

οἴδατε

oidate

GROWS FROM

⁨εἰδ-⁩/⁨ἰδ-⁩ (eid-/id-)

To see or perceive; ⁨οἶδα⁩, “know,” carries the sense of having seen.

“know” in this verse is oidate. Jesus says they do not yet perceive what their request entails. The hidden connection between knowing and seeing makes their answer, “We are able”, sound confident even while the full reality remains out of view.

ALSO GROWS

eidon: Saw or perceived.

εἶδον

This related form brings out the sense of perception beneath Jesus’s word for knowing.

idea: A visible form, appearance, or idea.

ἰδέα

Its visual root echoes the gap between making a request and seeing what the request contains.

A share in another’s life includes both the portion one receives and the experience one enters.

The LORD is the portion of my share and of my cup; you hold fast my lot.
Psalm 16:5 · SDVThe cup names the portion received, joining a share in life to what one is given to drink.
Do you not know that as many of us as were immersed into Jesus, the Anointed One, were immersed into his death?
Romans 6:3 · SDVImmersion becomes participation: entering the baptism is entering the death it signifies.
That I may know him, and the power of his standing up again, and the sharing in common of his sufferings, being shaped together with his death.
Philippians 3:10 · SDVKnowing Jesus includes sharing in his sufferings as well as the power of his resurrection.
And he went a little farther, and fell upon his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass by me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.
Matthew 26:39 · SDV

The cup Jesus asks the disciples whether they can drink becomes the cup he asks the Father to let pass. His later words reveal the full weight behind the image: the cup names an ordeal he faces himself.
