King James wording
King James Version
And he left them, and went out of the city into Bethany; and he lodged there.THE KEY
The city is not the boundary of presence: Jesus leaves Jerusalem and lodges in Bethany.
THE MEANING
You meet Jesus in motion: he leaves Jerusalem and spends the night in Bethany. Leaving the city’s center does not mean his presence has vanished; the verse places his dwelling elsewhere. It gives no reason for the departure, so the distinction itself remains visible.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief that Jesus can be found only at the city’s center loosens here: he leaves it and lodges in Bethany.
THE ROOT
ηὐλίσθη
ēulísthē
GROWS FROM
αὐλ-
aul-
Courtyard or enclosed place; the related verb carries the sense of lodging or passing the night.
“lodged” in this verse is ēulísthē. The Greek word family connects lodging with a place of enclosure. Matthew makes the relocation concrete: Jesus leaves the city, and the night is spent in Bethany, beyond its public center.
ALSO GROWS
aulē: Courtyard, enclosure, or fold.
αὐλή
This related word gives the family a sense of place: lodging is more than movement away; it is taking a place for the night.
aulizō: To lodge or spend the night.
αὐλίζω
This related verb shows the overnight sense carried by the word family in Matthew’s description.
THE PATTERN
God’s presence is not confined to a named sacred center; scripture locates encounter in ordinary and outlying places too.
And Jacob woke out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the LORD is in this place, and I did not perceive it.Jesus said to her, Woman, trust me, the hour is coming when you will bow down to the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.Yet the Highest does not settle in what is made by hands, as the prophet says.THE THREAD
And by day he was teaching in the temple, and at night he went out and bedded down on the mount that is called the mount of Olives.Luke uses ηὐλίζετο (ēulízeto, “abode for the night”), the same verb family as Matthew’s “lodged.” The parallel sets temple teaching by day beside a night dwelling beyond the city, making Matthew’s move to Bethany part of a recurring rhythm.
