King James wording
King James Version
And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir: and went not.THE KEY
The Greek gives the second son only “I, sir”; the explicit verb of departure appears in the narrator’s last clause, where it is negated.
THE MEANING
The verse places agreement beside absent movement: the answer sounds complete, but the promised departure never follows. It speaks now wherever a courteous yes is mistaken for the deed itself.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A respectful yes is the same as following through.
THE ROOT
ἀπῆλθεν
apēlthen
GROWS FROM
ἐρχ-
erch-
The movement of coming or going, arrival or departure.
The explicit action is ἀπῆλθεν (apēlthen, “went away”), from ἀπέρχομαι (aperchomai, “depart” or “go away”), built on ἔρχομαι (erchomai, “come” or “go”). This movement-root branches into entering, going out, and departing, making the final absence of departure concrete beside the earlier “I, sir.”
ALSO GROWS
aperchomai: Depart; go away.
ἀπέρχομαι
This is the verb behind “went not”: the departure is named, then denied.
eiserchomai: Enter; go in.
εἰσέρχομαι
This branch shows the same movement-root directed inward, contrasting with the departure that never occurs here.
exerchomai: Go out; come forth.
ἐξέρχομαι
This branch makes outward movement explicit, sharpening the gap between the son’s answer and his absent action.
THE PATTERN
Words of assent become legible through the action that follows them.
And Samuel said, Does the LORD delight in rising offerings and slaughtered offerings as much as in hearing and responding to the voice of the LORD? Behold, hearing and responding is better than a slaughtered offering; to prick the ear is better than the fat of rams. But be makers of the word, and not hearers only, miscounting yourselves.Little children, let us not love in word, nor in the tongue, but in works and in truth.THE THREAD
He answered and said, I will not, but afterward he turned, and went. Both brothers’ lines end with ἀπῆλθεν (apēlthen, “went away”): in the first, departure follows a changed mind; here, the earlier assent has no departure behind it. The repeated root makes the contrast visible in movement itself, not in how each brother sounds.
