King James wording
King James Version
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,THE KEY
A polished memorial can honor a voice only after it has become safe enough to bury.
THE MEANING
You can arrange a beautiful tribute to truth’s witnesses while keeping their truth at a distance. A voice that no longer confronts you can become a monument, while its living message still tests whether your life is aligned with it. The verse exposes the gap between decorating truth’s resting place and receiving truth as it speaks now.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Remembering the righteous does not by itself mean you share their alignment. Truth can be praised in a memorial and rejected when it addresses you.
THE ROOT
κοσμεῖτε
kosmeite
GROWS FROM
κοσμ-
kosm-
To arrange, put in order, or adorn.
“adorn” in this verse is kosmeite. The word for adorning the tomb belongs to the same Greek word family as kosmos, meaning an ordered arrangement and, by extension, the world. The tomb is not merely built; it is carefully made into a display, where honor can be arranged around a voice that can no longer confront its admirers.
ALSO GROWS
kosmos: Order, arrangement; the world.
κόσμος
This branch links adornment with an ordered display, sharpening the contrast between a polished memorial and a life actually shaped by the truth it honors.
kosmēma: An ornament or adornment.
κόσμημα
The shared word family makes the verse’s “garnish” concrete: the righteous are honored with an outward ornament, but the verse leaves open whether their alignment is lived.
δικαίων
dikaiōn
GROWS FROM
δικαι-
dikai-
Justness or right alignment.
The “righteous” are the aligned ones. Their memory can be honored as an ideal while the alignment their lives embodied remains unwelcome when it speaks into the present.
ALSO GROWS
dikaiosynē: Justice, righteousness; alignment.
δικαιοσύνη
This related noun names the quality carried by the “righteous,” drawing attention from their decorated resting place to the alignment itself.
dikaioō: To justify, vindicate, or regard as right.
δικαιόω
This verb shares the word family and highlights the question the verse presses: what does it mean to recognize someone as right when their voice is no longer challenging you?
THE PATTERN
A living voice can be resisted, then honored once it has become a safely arranged memory.
Who say to the seers, "Do not see," and to the visionaries, "Do not see for us what is straight. Speak to us what is smooth, see what is slippery."And you say, “If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been sharers with them in the blood of the prophets.”Woe to you! For you build the memorial tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them.THE THREAD
Do not take the shape of this age, but be reshaped by the renewing of your mind, so that you may test what is the good, well-pleasing, and complete will of God.Matthew’s “garnish” is kosmeō, to arrange or adorn; Romans’ “world” is kosmos, from the same Greek word family for arrangement. The shared root sets the polished memorial beside the world’s ordered pattern: outward display alone does not show what is shaping a life.
