King James wording
King James Version
And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut.THE KEY
The shut door turns welcome into a boundary, separating those who have entered from those still outside.
THE MEANING
You encounter a threshold where readiness becomes entry: those ready go in with the bridegroom, and then the door closes. Welcome and finality occupy the same scene; the opening does not remain available indefinitely.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The assumption that an opening stays available indefinitely is undone: the door closes after the ready have entered.
THE ROOT
ἐκλείσθη
ekleisthe
GROWS FROM
κλει
klei
To close or shut.
“shut” in this verse is ekleisthe. The verb makes closure a boundary: the prepared pass inward, and then the opening itself is closed. Its compounds preserve both directions of this action, shutting out and shutting in, so the door determines who is on which side.
ALSO GROWS
apokleio: To shut out or exclude.
ἀποκλείω
This branch shows the outward side of the closed door: closure can leave someone outside.
synkleio: To shut in or enclose.
συγκλείω
This branch shows the inward side: the same closing can hold those who have entered within.
THE PATTERN
A door’s closing makes the threshold decisive: it can hold those within and leave those without.
And those who came in, male and female of all flesh, came as God had commanded him, and the LORD shut him in.When the master of the house has risen and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and to knock on the door, saying, "Lord, Lord, open to us," and he will answer and say to you, "I do not know you, nor where you are from."Write to the messenger of the assembly in Philadelphia. These things say the one who is set apart, the one who is true, the one who holds the key of David. He opens, and no one shuts. He shuts, and no one opens.THE THREAD
When the master of the house has risen and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and to knock on the door, saying, "Lord, Lord, open to us," and he will answer and say to you, "I do not know you, nor where you are from."The word translated “shut” in both verses comes from κλείω (kleio), meaning “to shut.” Luke shows the same closure from the outside: those who arrive after the door closes are left knocking.
