King James wording
King James Version
For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods.THE KEY
Heaven’s governance begins with the master’s own goods placed in human hands: the first fact is entrustment.
THE MEANING
The governance of the heavens reaches you as an entrusting: what belongs to the master is placed in the hands of those called his own. His distance does not cancel the bond; the goods remain his even as they are held in trust.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie that nothing has been entrusted to you until you own it dissolves here: the goods are already in your hands, while still belonging to their giver.
THE ROOT
παρέδωκεν
paredōken
GROWS FROM
δίδωμι (didōmi), within παραδίδωμι (paradidōmi)
To give; in this compound, to hand over or entrust.
The form παρέδωκεν (paredōken, “handed over”) belongs to παραδίδωμι (paradidōmi, “hand over, entrust”), built on δίδωμι (didōmi, “give”). The master’s giving puts his own goods into their hands while “his goods” keeps ownership with him: they receive a real trust, not a change in whose the goods are.
ALSO GROWS
metadidōmi: To impart or share.
μεταδίδωμι
This branch shows giving as something that can pass through a recipient to others, illuminating the potential within entrusted goods.
apodidōmi: To give back, render, or repay.
ἀποδίδωμι
The same give-root can describe a return, keeping the act of receiving connected to what is later rendered.
THE PATTERN
God’s gifts arrive as trusts for tending, governing, and sharing, not as self-originating possessions.
And the LORD God took Adam and set him down in the garden of Eden, to serve it and to guard it.You make him rule over the works of your hands; you place all things under his feet.As each has received a gift, serve it to one another as good stewards of the many-colored favor of God.THE THREAD
For God so loved the world that he gave his only-born Son, that everyone who leans their full weight into him should not perish, but have the life of the ages.Matthew’s παρέδωκεν (paredōken, “handed over”) and John’s ἔδωκεν (edōken, “gave”) share the core verb δίδωμι (didōmi, “give”). The connection reveals giving as the first movement: the master places what is his within others’ reach before their response enters the story.
