This verse in the King James

King James wording
Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.

The verb translated “trimmed” also means put in order or adorn, so readiness appears as arranging what carries the light.

When the moment arrives, everyone rises and puts the lamp in order; readiness takes shape in care for what carries light. Yet the gesture is shared, and an arranged lamp still needs what will keep it burning.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that readiness is passive possession: every lamp is handled and prepared. An orderly lamp by itself still does not show whether it will keep burning.

GROWS FROM

κόσμ-

kosm-

Order, arrangement; the verb ⁨κοσμέω⁩ (kosmeō) means to put in order or adorn.

English “trimmed” can sound like a narrow maintenance task; the Greek also carries the sense of setting the lamps in order. The same word family links that act with ⁨κόσμος⁩ (kosmos, order or the ordered world) and ⁨κόσμιος⁩ (kosmios, orderly), making readiness an act of arrangement.

ALSO GROWS

kosmos: Order, arrangement; the ordered world.

κόσμος

The same stem connects the lamps’ arrangement with the idea of things set in order.

kosmeō: To arrange, put in order, or adorn.

κοσμέω

This is the verb used here; its wider sense lets “trimmed” also carry the image of preparing and adorning the lamps.

kosmios: Orderly, well-arranged, or decorous.

κόσμιος

This related word carries the family’s sense of order into conduct, echoing the readiness expressed through arranging the lamps.

Readiness becomes visible when what carries the light is prepared to shine.

And you shall command the children of Israel, that they take to you clear oil of crushed olives for the light, to cause the lamp to rise continually.
Exodus 27:20 · SDVThe lamp’s steady light depends on provision prepared for its continued burning.
Nor do people kindle a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it shines for all who are in the house.
Matthew 5:15 · SDVThe lamp is placed where its light can reach the people around it.
Let your loins be girded, and your lamps be burning.
Luke 12:35 · SDVReadiness is pictured as being prepared while the lights remain burning.
Then it said, I will turn back to my house from which I came out, and when it comes, it finds it empty, swept, and adorned.
Matthew 12:44 · SDV

“Garnished” translates ⁨κοσμέω⁩ (kosmeō, arrange or adorn), the same verb used for “trimmed” here: in both scenes, something is put in order. The house is still empty, exposing the limit of arrangement alone and sharpening the unanswered question in the lamps.
