King James wording
King James Version
And when he was gone out into the porch, another maid saw him, and said unto them that were there, This fellow was also with Jesus of Nazareth.THE KEY
The charge is relational: what is seen is not Peter’s face alone, but that he has been with Jesus.
THE MEANING
A connection can be seen and named by someone else before you name yourself. Here, Peter’s association with Jesus is publicly legible, and “another” makes the recognition accumulate. Being identified and answering for that identity remain two different moments.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that identity stays private until you speak it: another person names Peter’s connection before his own answer.
THE ROOT
μετὰ
meta
GROWS FROM
μετα-
A Greek preposition meaning with, among, or in company with; here it marks association.
The accusation is not that Peter merely saw Jesus, but that he was in company with him. The same Greek element appears in words for sharing and partaking, giving “with” a sense of connection that others can recognize.
ALSO GROWS
metalambanō: Partake; receive a share.
μεταλαμβάνω
The compound begins with μετα-, carrying association into the idea of sharing in something.
metadidōmi: Share; impart.
μεταδίδωμι
The same μετα- element appears in a word for giving a share, extending “with” toward participation.
ἄλλη
allē
GROWS FROM
ἀλλ-
Other; distinct from the one already named.
“Another” makes the recognition cumulative: this is a second observer, not the first voice repeated. The Greek word marks a distinct witness, so the association gains weight through recurrence.
ALSO GROWS
allēlōn: One another; each other.
ἀλλήλων
The same ἀλλ- family describes people in relation to one another.
allotrios: Another’s; belonging to someone else or foreign.
ἀλλότριος
The shared ἀλλ- stem keeps the sense of distinction from what is one’s own.
נָצְרַת
Natzrat
GROWS FROM
נצר
Watch, guard, preserve.
The name of Nazareth is associated with watching and guarding, so the place-name carries a nature beneath its sound. The name Jesus carries deliverance from narrowness into spaciousness; here, the witness identifies him through both personal name and place.
ALSO GROWS
natsar: Watch, guard, preserve.
נָצַר
It shares the root consonants נצר and gives the name its sense of watching or guarding.
notser: One who keeps or guards.
נֹצֵר
This form shares the same consonants and makes the guarding sense into the nature of a keeper.
THE PATTERN
A relationship can become visible to others before the person named in it speaks for himself.
And his master saw that the LORD was with him, and that the LORD made all that he did break through in his hand. Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and grasped that they were unlettered and ordinary men, they marveled, and they knew them, that they had been with Jesus.By this all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.THE THREAD
And the servant girl saw him again and began to say to those standing near, This man is from among them.Mark’s parallel calls Peter “one of them,” making Matthew’s “with” concrete as belonging to a group. In both accounts, someone names his association before Peter answers.
