King James wording
King James Version
Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can.THE KEY
The Greek command to make the tomb secure carries the root of falling: security is framed as what keeps something from falling.
THE MEANING
The verse meets you in the urge to close every opening around an uncertain outcome: take the guard, go, and secure the tomb as far as you know how. Its wording gives a task, not mastery; the limit is built into “as you can.” A guarded boundary does not make the future yours to command.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that having every safeguard in place makes the outcome fully controllable.
THE ROOT
ἀσφαλίσασθε
asphalisasthe
GROWS FROM
σφαλ-
sphal-
The stem of a word meaning to stumble, cause to fall, or overthrow.
“make it as firm as you know how” in this verse is asphalisasthe. The command translated “make it as sure” belongs to a word family that frames security as being safe from a fall. The closing phrase, “as you know how,” bounds that security by human capacity.
ALSO GROWS
sphállō: To make stumble, cause to fall, or overthrow.
σφάλλω
This is the fall against which security is framed: the shared stem makes the contrast audible beneath the English word “sure.”
asphalḗs: Safe, secure, not liable to fall.
ἀσφαλής
This adjective shares the stem and carries the sense of being protected from a fall; the verse uses its word family as a command to secure the tomb.
aspháleia: Safety, security, certainty.
ἀσφάλεια
The same word family names the state of security, linking the command to make the tomb secure with the idea of safety itself.
THE PATTERN
Human efforts can secure an immediate boundary without securing the future against what exceeds their power.
And said, This far shall you come, but no further, and here shall your swelling waves be held?Take counsel together, and it shall be broken; speak the word, and it shall not stand, for God is with us.But if it is of God, you cannot undo them, lest perhaps you be found even fighting against God.THE THREAD
So they went and made the tomb firm, pressing a seal onto the stone, and posted the guard. This verse repeats the same Greek word family: the tomb is secured by sealing the stone and setting a watch. The repeated root makes the instruction visible as an act of securing the boundary, while the story leaves the outcome beyond that act.
