This verse in the King James

King James wording
Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

The verse makes “Lord” a title that must become a life: saying it does not cross the threshold; doing the Father’s will does.

You can call Jesus “Lord” and still remain outside the governance of heaven; the verse places the dividing line at whether the Father’s will is done. Entry is bound to a life that carries out that will, not to the title spoken.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that saying the right confession guarantees entry even when the Father’s will remains undone.

ποιῶν

poiōn

GROWS FROM

⁨ποιέω⁩ (poieō; verbal stem ⁨ποιε-⁩)

To do, make, or produce.

The word translated “doeth” comes from the same word family as “maker” and “thing made.” The verse sets spoken recognition beside something taking form in a person’s actions: the Father’s will is not only named, but made visible.

ALSO GROWS

poiētēs: A doer or maker.

ποιητής

It names a person through what they enact, echoing the verse’s distinction between saying “Lord” and doing the Father’s will.

poiēma: A thing made or work.

ποίημα

It carries the same root into what takes shape, illuminating action as the visible expression of a will.

εἰσελεύσεται

eiseleusetai

GROWS FROM

ἔρχομαι

erchomai

To come or go; in compounds, to move in or out.

“enter” in this verse is eiseleusetai. The Greek verb pictures movement into a realm. Here, entering is not merely claiming a place with a title; it is arrival into the governance named in the verse.

ALSO GROWS

eiserchomai: To come or go in; to enter.

εἰσέρχομαι

This is the verse’s verb, framing entry as movement into the realm being described.

exerchomai: To go out or come out.

ἐξέρχομαι

It shares the root for movement but turns outward, clarifying that “enter” names a direction into a realm.

βασιλεία

basileia

GROWS FROM

βασιλε-

Kingship, reign, or royal rule; also the realm of a king.

“governance of the heavens” in this verse is basileia. The Greek word can name the rule itself as well as the realm it governs. Heard as “the governance of heaven,” the verse links entry with the Father’s will taking effect in a person’s life.

ALSO GROWS

basileus: A king or ruler.

βασιλεύς

It names the one whose authority gives the word family its sense of rule.

basileuō: To reign or rule as king.

βασιλεύω

It expresses the active exercise of rule, bringing out the governing force in “kingdom.”

The Father’s governance is recognized in enacted response, not in religious speech alone.

And Samuel said, Does the LORD delight in rising offerings and slaughtered offerings as much as in hearing and responding to the voice of the LORD? Behold, hearing and responding is better than a slaughtered offering; to prick the ear is better than the fat of rams.
1 Samuel 15:22 · SDVIt places carrying out the LORD’s voice above outward religious performance.
The one who holds my instructions and guards them is the one who loves me; the one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and make myself visible to him.
John 14:21 · SDVIt makes love visible through keeping what Jesus commands.
But be makers of the word, and not hearers only, miscounting yourselves.
James 1:22 · SDVIt names the gap between hearing words and letting them take form in action.
Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house upon the rock.
Matthew 7:24 · SDV

“Doeth” here shares the Greek word family ⁨ποιέω⁩ (poieō), meaning to do or make, with “doeth” in Matthew 7:21. The next verse shows that hearing Jesus’ words and doing them gives action a foundation.
