This verse in the King James

King James wording
Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

The name invoked three times is not a password; it is the nature against which each claimed work is measured.

The verse addresses the reader now: visible spiritual speech, deliverance, and mighty works do not by themselves show that a life embodies the nature of the Lord invoked. The list of accomplishments cannot settle the relationship expressed by “I never knew you” in the next verse.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie is: “If I can point to prophecy, deliverance, and mighty works done in God’s name, that proves I belong to him.”

ὀνόματι

onomati

GROWS FROM

ὄνομα

onoma

name, designation, reputation

The repeated phrase places each claimed act under the identity of the one named. Read as name-as-nature, the claim becomes a question of whether the speech, deliverance, and power express that nature; the list alone cannot answer it.

ALSO GROWS

onomazō: to name or call by name

ὀνομάζω

Naming brings identity into speech, echoing the speakers’ repeated appeal to the one they name.

onomastos: named, renowned

ὀνομαστός

A name can carry a reputation, showing how the nature associated with it matters when someone acts in its name.

Invoking God’s name and displaying spiritual power do not by themselves establish that a life embodies God’s nature.

And Samuel said, Does the LORD delight in rising offerings and slaughtered offerings as much as in hearing and responding to the voice of the LORD? Behold, hearing and responding is better than a slaughtered offering; to prick the ear is better than the fat of rams.
1 Samuel 15:22 · SDVReligious offerings do not stand in for responding to the LORD.
Why do you call me, Lord, Lord, and do not do what I say?
Luke 6:46 · SDVCalling Jesus Lord does not itself show that a person follows what he says.
And if I hold the gift to prophesy, and see all sealed things and all knowledge; and if I hold all trust, so that I could move mountains, but do not hold love, I am nothing.
1 Corinthians 13:2 · SDVEven prophecy and power to move mountains do not establish the substance that gives them meaning.
And then I will declare to them, I never knew you; withdraw from me, you who live without boundary.
Matthew 7:23 · SDV

This next sentence answers the repeated appeal to the Lord’s name: the claimed works are present, yet the decisive statement is “I never knew you.” The passage turns from what the speakers did in his name to the relationship their accomplishments cannot prove.
