This verse in the King James

King James wording
And a certain scribe came, and said unto him, Master, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.

The scribe promises to follow wherever Jesus goes, but “wherever” names a road whose destination he cannot yet know.

The verse places you where a promise reaches beyond the route already known. To follow is to go with the one called Teacher; “wherever” leaves the destination open.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

A confident promise does not mean the road ahead is already known.

ἀκολουθέω

akoloutheō

GROWS FROM

ἀκολουθ-

akolouth-

To accompany or follow, going with another.

English can make “follow” sound like agreement from a distance; this verb carries the sense of accompanying someone along the way. Its connection to ⁨κέλευθος⁩ (keleuthos, “road”) is commonly proposed, though uncertain; the verb itself makes shared direction central to the scribe’s promise.

ALSO GROWS

akolouthos: follower, attendant

ἀκόλουθος

This related word names someone who accompanies another, echoing the company contained in “I will follow thee.”

akolouthōs: in succession, accordingly

ἀκολούθως

This related form evokes one thing coming after another, illuminating “whithersoever” as a continuing path rather than a single declaration.

Following becomes visible as shared movement toward a destination not yet fully known.

And Ruth said, Do not press me to let go of you, or to turn back from following after you. For where you walk, I will walk, and where you lodge, I will lodge. Your people are my people, and your God my God.
Ruth 1:16 · SDVRuth’s promise echoes “whithersoever”: loyalty takes the form of going where another goes.
And straightway they let go of the nets, and followed him.
Matthew 4:20 · SDVFollowing is shown as movement that carries the followers away from what had filled their day.
If anyone serves me, let them follow me, and where I am, there my servant will also be. If anyone serves me, my Father will give them weight.
John 12:26 · SDVThe verse connects following with sharing the place where the one followed is.
And straightway they let go of the nets, and followed him.
Matthew 4:20 · SDV

Matthew 8:19 holds following as a future promise; here the same Greek verb, ⁨ἀκολουθέω⁩ (akoloutheō, “follow”), appears in action. The shared root makes the connection plain: following means accompanying him on the way.
