This verse in the King James

King James wording
For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.

His command carries because he stands beneath authority before others stand beneath him.

Authority here is relational: a command moves through someone who also stands under authority. “Go,” “Come,” and “Do this” make that order visible in ordinary action.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the belief that authority is self-made power: the centurion locates his ability to command within a chain that also governs him.

ὑπὸ ἐξουσίαν τασσόμενος

hypo exousian tassomenos

GROWS FROM

τάσσω

tassō, to arrange, set in place, or appoint

The Greek phrase presents the centurion as someone placed under authority, while the verse immediately describes soldiers under him. The repeated “under” reveals one ordered structure: his commands travel from a place he occupies within it.

ALSO GROWS

taxis: order, arrangement, rank

τάξις

This branch names the ordered positions that make the centurion’s command intelligible.

diatassō: arrange, direct, or prescribe

διατάσσω

This branch shows the same root at work in directives: authority gives action its place and direction.

Authority and responsibility move through ordered placement and delegation.

Moreover, you shall look out from all the people for men of strength, who stand in awe of God, men of truth, who hate plunder; and set such over them as rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.
Exodus 18:21 · SDVResponsibility is distributed through defined positions, so authority operates across an ordered chain.
Let every living soul place itself under the authorities that hold above. For there is no authority except under God, and the ones that are have been arranged under God.
Romans 13:1 · SDVAuthority is described as ordered placement, with powers situated within a structure beyond themselves.
But now God has set the limbs, each one of them, in the body, as he willed.
1 Corinthians 12:18 · SDVEach member has a place within a whole, showing how a larger order works through distinct positions.
Let every living soul place itself under the authorities that hold above. For there is no authority except under God, and the ones that are have been arranged under God.
Romans 13:1 · SDV

The Greek word rendered “ordained” comes from ⁨τάσσω⁩ (tassō, “set in order”), the same root behind the centurion being “placed” under authority. Together the verses reveal authority as a position within an order, not a power that stands alone.
