King James wording
King James Version
Feed thy people with thy rod, the flock of thine heritage, which dwell solitarily in the wood, in the midst of Carmel: let them feed in Bashan and Gilead, as in the days of old.THE KEY
The verb rendered “feed” is the shepherding itself, so guidance and nourishment are one act.
THE MEANING
Even when you find yourself alone among the trees, you remain the shepherd’s own flock. His rod guides you toward food: Carmel is orchard-land, and Bashan and Gilead are pasture-rich country. Solitude is not the last word; provision is the direction of the shepherding.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Being alone means you have been abandoned: the flock can dwell apart and still belong to the shepherd, who guides it toward pasture.
THE ROOT
רְעֵה
re'eh
GROWS FROM
רעה
To tend or shepherd a flock; to feed it.
“Shepherd your people” in this verse is re'eh. The same root names tending the flock and feeding it: guidance and nourishment are one act. The flock’s solitary dwelling is held within that shepherding, which leads it toward pasture.
ALSO GROWS
ro'eh: Shepherd; one who tends a flock.
רֹעֶה
Psalm 23 uses this word for the LORD: the one who shepherds is the one who provides.
mir'eh: Pasture; a grazing place.
מִרְעֶה
This branch names the place where the shepherd’s tending becomes food for the flock.
THE PATTERN
The shepherd’s care carries a separated flock from solitude into provision.
A Psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd; I do not come up short.I will feed them in a good pasture, and on the high mountains of Israel will be their fold. There they will lie down in a good fold, and in a fat pasture they will feed on the mountains of Israel.I am the door. Through me, if anyone enters, he shall be delivered, and shall go in and out, and shall find pasture.THE THREAD
A Psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd; I do not come up short.Micah’s “feed” and Psalm 23’s “shepherd” come from the same Hebrew root, רעה (ra’ah), to tend or shepherd a flock. What English presents as feeding in one verse and shepherding in the other is one act: the shepherd leads the flock into provision.
