King James wording
King James Version
The children also of Benjamin from Geba dwelt at Michmash, and Aija, and Beth-el, and in their villages,THE KEY
The house of God is named among the places people actually inhabit, so restoration takes root in ordinary places as well as at the center.
THE MEANING
Belonging takes shape as people inhabit actual places, from a shared center to the villages around it. Sacredness is present in the landscape of daily life, among homes and settlements.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Only the center matters; the surrounding settlements are peripheral. This verse names the villages as part of the same inhabited whole.
THE ROOT
וַיֵּשְׁבוּ
vayyeshvu
GROWS FROM
ישב
y-sh-b
To sit, remain, settle, dwell.
“settled” in this verse is vayyeshvu. The Hebrew root holds sitting, remaining, and inhabiting together: these families take their place and stay. One named site is Bethel, בֵּית־אֵל (Beit-El), “house of God”; its sacred name sits within a list of inhabited towns and villages.
ALSO GROWS
yoshév: One who sits; an inhabitant.
יֹשֵׁב
The branch names a resident as someone who remains in a place, not merely someone counted against it.
moshav: Seat, dwelling, settlement.
מוֹשָׁב
The same root can name both a seat and a settled community, joining a place to the act of dwelling in it.
THE PATTERN
Restoration takes material form when people inhabit both a common center and the surrounding places where daily life unfolds.
Those who come from you shall build the dry ruins of the ages. You shall raise up the foundations of generation to generation, and you shall be called the mender of the breach, the one who turns the paths back to dwell in.Thus says the Lord GOD, On the day I have cleansed you from all your crookednesses, I will cause you to settle in the cities, and the dry ruins will be built. And they, holding fast day by day with one passion in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, took their food with gladness and singleness of heart.THE THREAD
And the princes of the people settled in Jerusalem, and the rest of the people let the lots fall, to bring one in ten to settle in Jerusalem, the set-apart city, and nine parts to settle in the other cities. The verb translated “dwelt” shares the Hebrew root ישב (yashav), “sit, remain, dwell.” The first verse distinguishes Jerusalem from the other cities; this one shows the surrounding settlements as part of the same restored presence.
