King James wording
King James Version
Lod, and Ono, the valley of craftsmen.THE KEY
The valley is defined less by its terrain than by the skilled hands that give it character.
THE MEANING
A place is more than its coordinates: the work practiced there can become part of its name. Here, the craftsmen are woven into the valley’s identity. The places around you, too, carry the imprint of what people make and practice within them.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief that a place is neutral scenery, separate from the work of the people who inhabit it.
THE ROOT
הַחֲרָשִׁים
haḥārāšîm
GROWS FROM
חרשׁ
ḥ-r-š
To cut, engrave, or shape through skilled work; the artisan noun names one who fashions material.
“craftsmen” in this verse is haḥārāšîm. English names an occupation, while the Hebrew root lets you hear the maker inside the valley’s name. The singular ḥārāš opens into ḥārāšîm: an individual craft becomes a shared signature.
ALSO GROWS
ḥārāš ʿēṣ: Woodworker or carpenter
חָרָשׁ עֵץ
The same artisan word applies to skilled shaping in wood, showing that the root reaches across trades.
ḥārāš barzel: Worker in iron or smith
חָרָשׁ בַּרְזֶל
The root also names skilled work in metal; different materials share the same language of making.
THE PATTERN
Skilled hands give lasting form to shared places and objects.
And Meonothai begat Ophrah, and Seraiah begat Joab, the father of the valley of Charashim, for they were carvers. He has filled them with wisdom of heart, to work all manner of work, of the carver, and of the designer, and of the embroiderer, in blue, and in purple, in scarlet, and fine linen, and of the weaver, even of those who do any work, and of those who devise designs. And because he was of the same craft, he stayed with them and worked, for by their craft they were tentmakers.THE THREAD
And Meonothai begat Ophrah, and Seraiah begat Joab, the father of the valley of Charashim, for they were carvers. The Hebrew name Charashim carries the same root as “craftsmen.” The linked verse makes the connection explicit: the valley bears the makers’ name because the people there are craftsmen.
