King James wording
King James Version
Of Sallai, Kallai; of Amok, Eber;THE KEY
Eber’s name carries the root of crossing over, so this spare priestly roster holds an image of life passing through generations.
THE MEANING
This line pairs names in a continuing line of priestly service, giving each person a place in its passage forward. Eber carries the sense of crossing over, holding movement alongside that continuity.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A name in a list is only a label, with nothing inside it beyond identification.
THE ROOT
עֵבֶר
ʿEḇer
GROWS FROM
עבר
ʿ-b-r
To pass over or cross.
Eber’s name grows from the root of crossing over. English presents it as a name alone; the Hebrew also holds the image of passage, carried here within a continuing line of service.
ALSO GROWS
ʿāvar: To pass over, cross.
עָבַר
This verb makes the movement inside Eber’s name visible.
maʿavār: A passage or crossing.
מַעֲבָר
This noun shows the same root taking shape as a place of passage, deepening the image held in the name.
THE PATTERN
A name in scripture can carry the nature or calling that shapes a life.
No longer shall your name be called Abram, but Abraham, father of multitudes, for I have set you as a father of many nations. And I also say to you, You are Peter, the stone, and upon this bedrock I will build my assembly, and the gates of Hades shall not overpower it.THE THREAD
When you cross through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not kindle upon you.Eber carries the root עבר, “to cross over,” and Isaiah uses that same root in “passest through.” The name opens into a passage through waters and fire, with presence holding through the crossing.
