This verse in the King James

King James wording
And the priests and the Levites purified themselves, and purified the people, and the gates, and the wall.

The same cleansing reaches the people and the boundaries they gather within, bringing persons and shared space into one act of purification.

This verse speaks to a life held in common: cleansing reaches the people and the spaces that shape their gathering. The repeated act joins what is personal with what is shared, leaving no part of that whole outside its reach.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that purity is only inward or private: the gates and wall are named alongside the people.

וַיִּטַּהֲרוּ

vayyitaharu

GROWS FROM

טהר

ṭ-h-r

To be clean or pure; to cleanse.

“cleansed” in this verse is vayyitaharu. The same verb is used first of the priests and Levites, then of the people, gates, and wall. Its root holds these different targets within one process of cleansing: the people and the boundaries of their shared space are cleared together.

ALSO GROWS

ṭāhôr: Clean, pure.

טָהוֹר

This names the condition that follows the cleansing, so the verse holds both the clearing and its result.

Cleansing reaches across the whole life, from inward conscience and conduct to the shared spaces that hold a community.

And the priests went into the innermost room of the house of the LORD for its cleansing, and brought out all the uncleanness they found in the temple of the LORD into the court of the house of the LORD. And the Levites took it, to carry it out outside, to the brook Kidron.
2 Chronicles 29:16 · SDVCleansing the temple means bringing its uncleanness out into the open, showing the work reaching into shared space.
How much more will the blood of the Anointed One, who through the breath of the ages brought himself near without blemish to God, cleanse our shared sight from dead works to serve the living God.
Hebrews 9:14 · SDVThe conscience is cleansed for a changed life, showing the same pattern reaching inward and then into how a person serves.
For on that day the priest makes a covering for you, to cleanse you, so that you may be clean from all your shortcomings before the LORD.
Leviticus 16:30 · SDV

The Hebrew cleansing word here and in Nehemiah comes from ⁨טהר⁩ (ṭ-h-r), meaning to be clean or pure, to cleanse. Leviticus applies that cleansing to the people before the LORD; Nehemiah extends the same root across priests, people, gates, and wall.
