King James wording
King James Version
So stood the two companies of them that gave thanks in the house of God, and I, and the half of the rulers with me:THE KEY
The companies are themselves called “thanksgivings”: gratitude here has a body and a place in God’s house.
THE MEANING
Here, gratitude has a visible shape: people stand together in God’s house, and the speaker and leaders stand among them. You meet thanksgiving as shared presence, not only as a feeling within one person.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief that gratitude is only private or inward dissolves here: thanks appears as a gathered company occupying a shared place.
THE ROOT
תּוֹדֹת
todot
GROWS FROM
ידה
Y-D-H
To give thanks, praise, or acknowledge openly.
“extended their hands” in this verse is todot. The Hebrew calls these groups todot, a word for thanksgivings or thanksgiving offerings. The root lets the people and their praise occupy the same image: the gathered company gives thanks, and its very name carries that thanksgiving.
ALSO GROWS
yādâ: To give thanks, praise, or acknowledge.
יָדָה
The verb names the act carried by the companies standing in the house.
tôdâ: Thanksgiving, praise, or a thanksgiving offering.
תּוֹדָה
The related noun shows how thanks can take the shape of a gathered offering.
THE PATTERN
Thanksgiving becomes a shared offering with a place in God’s presence and a voice that keeps giving thanks.
Then Hezekiah answered and said, Now you have filled your hands to the LORD. Draw near, and bring sacrifices and thank offerings into the house of the LORD. And the assembly brought in sacrifices and thank offerings, and all who were free-hearted brought burnt offerings.Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with a clamor of praise; lift your hands to him, and bless his nature.Through him, then, let us always carry up a sacrifice of praise to God, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to his name.THE THREAD
Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with a clamor of praise; lift your hands to him, and bless his nature.Nehemiah’s word translated “companies” is todot, from the same root as todah, “thanksgiving.” Psalm 100 uses todah for what enters God’s gates, so the shared root joins the gathered people and their thanksgiving in one movement.
