King James Version
Also Bakbukiah and Unni, their brethren, were over against them in the watches.THE KEY
The service lasts because its watch is shared: one group keeps vigil opposite another.
THE MEANING
The work before you can be held in shared watches: one group stands opposite another in their appointed duties. Continuity is carried between people, not by one voice alone.
THE ROOT
מִשְׁמָרוֹת
mishmarot
GROWS FROM
שׁמר
To keep, guard, or watch over what is entrusted.
English makes “watches” sound like periods of time, while מִשְׁמָרוֹת (mishmarot) also carries the sense of guarded responsibility. The same root appears when the Psalm says God “keepeth” Israel: the human watches are another branch of keeping.
ALSO GROWS
shamar: To keep, guard, or watch over.
שָׁמַר
The verb shares the root of “watches,” showing that the duty is an active keeping of what is entrusted.
mishmeret: An assigned charge, duty, or watch.
מִשְׁמֶרֶת
This related word makes the watch a defined responsibility, not simply a mood of alertness.
THE PATTERN
What is entrusted is preserved through watchful keeping, whether by appointed human watches or unceasing divine care.
And I said to them, Let not the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun is hot, and while they stand by, let them shut the doors and bar them. And appoint watches of the settlers of Jerusalem, every one in his watch, and every one facing his own house.Look, the watcher of Israel neither nods nor sleeps. And in that same country there were shepherds living out in the open field, keeping the watches of the night over their flock.THE THREAD
Look, the watcher of Israel neither nods nor sleeps. The word translated “keepeth” comes from שָׁמַר (shamar), the same root carried by “watches” here. Nehemiah shows keeping shared among people; the Psalm extends that same root to God’s watch, which does not sleep.
