This verse in the King James

King James wording
Then contended I with the rulers, and said, Why is the house of God forsaken? And I gathered them together, and set them in their place.

The Hebrew says they are set back on their “standing”: restoration means returning people to their place of service.

The verse puts neglect before the reader as a question of responsibility: when the house of God is forsaken, the rulers are confronted. Restoration takes concrete form as people are gathered and set back into their standing, where their service can resume.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief that a neglected sacred work is repaired by rebuking its emptiness alone; here, the response also restores the people to their service.

עָמְדָם

ʿomdām

GROWS FROM

עמד

ʿ-m-d

To stand, take a stand, or remain standing.

“stood them in their standing” in this verse is ʿomdām. The word rendered “place” is literally “their standing.” The verse pictures restoration as returning people to the position where their service can happen, rather than merely filling an empty space.

ALSO GROWS

ʿāmad: Stand, remain, or take one’s stand.

עָמַד

This verb makes the verse’s “place” an active standing, not simply a location.

maʿămād: A standing or assigned station.

מַעֲמָד

This related word carries the sense of a position one occupies, illuminating the service role restored in the verse.

Shared worship is restored through people being gathered and returned to their appointed work.

At that time the LORD separated the tribe of Levi, to lift the ark of the covenant of the LORD, to stand before the LORD and minister to him, and to bless in his nature, to this day.
Deuteronomy 10:8 · SDVLevi’s service includes standing before the LORD, the same root image beneath Nehemiah’s “their place.”
But now God has set the limbs, each one of them, in the body, as he willed.
1 Corinthians 12:18 · SDVThe body functions as each member is set within the place given to it.
Not leaving behind the gathering of ourselves, as is the habit of some, but urging one another, and all the more as you see the day drawing near.
Hebrews 10:25 · SDVGathering together keeps shared life from being abandoned.
At that time the LORD separated the tribe of Levi, to lift the ark of the covenant of the LORD, to stand before the LORD and minister to him, and to bless in his nature, to this day.
Deuteronomy 10:8 · SDV

“Their standing” in Nehemiah and “to stand before the LORD” in Deuteronomy share the root ⁨עמד⁩ (ʿ-m-d), meaning “to stand.” The restored place is a standing of service, which makes the house more than a building.
