King James wording
King James Version
And the rulers knew not whither I went, or what I did; neither had I as yet told it to the Jews, nor to the priests, nor to the nobles, nor to the rulers, nor to the rest that did the work.THE KEY
The work can be real before it is known, because doing and telling are separate acts.
THE MEANING
This verse meets you in the gap between what you are doing and what others can yet know: the action is already real before it becomes a shared account. Silence marks withheld disclosure, not an empty place where no work exists. The work is underway even while its purpose remains unannounced.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that meaningful work exists only after other people recognize or understand it.
THE ROOT
הִגַּדְתִּי
higgadti
GROWS FROM
נגד
n-g-d
to declare, make known, or bring into view
“told” in this verse is higgadti. The root also appears in נֶגֶד (neged), meaning “before” or “in front of.” The work has not yet been set before the community in words, though Nehemiah is already doing it.
ALSO GROWS
maggid: one who tells or declares
מַגִּיד
This branch makes the contrast concrete: the work is underway, but no one has yet been made its teller.
neged: before, in front of, opposite
נֶגֶד
The verse’s silence leaves the work unplaced before the others as a spoken matter.
יָדְעוּ
yadʿu
GROWS FROM
ידע
y-d-ʿ
to know or perceive
“perceive” in this verse is yadʿu. The verse distinguishes the rulers’ lack of knowing from Nehemiah’s not yet telling. Their lack of awareness does not erase the action: it shows that the work and its public account have not yet converged.
ALSO GROWS
yadaʿ: to know or perceive
יָדַע
The rulers have not encountered the reality of Nehemiah’s route and actions.
daʿat: knowledge or perception
דַּעַת
The verse names a gap in what is known while the work itself continues.
THE PATTERN
What is underway may remain unspoken for a time, then come into view.
A time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to hush, and a time to speak. For there is nothing hidden that will not be brought to light, nor has anything become hidden away, but that it come into the open.THE THREAD
And I rose in the night, I and a few men with me. I told no man what my God had set in my heart to do at Jerusalem. No beast was with me but the beast I rode upon.Nehemiah 2:12 uses the same Hebrew verb הִגַּדְתִּי (higgadti, “I told/declared”). The shared root shows that the action is already held in motion while its telling remains withheld.
