King James wording
King James Version
Then I came to the governors beyond the river, and gave them the king’s letters. Now the king had sent captains of the army and horsemen with me.THE KEY
The king’s “sent” is שׁלח (shalach), sending that also means release, here, movement through the crossing arrives with authority and armed accompaniment.
THE MEANING
When you meet a crossing that requires access, passage can include both recognition and concrete accompaniment. The letters carry authority to the governors, while captains and horsemen travel with the one crossing; the way forward is not depicted as unaided.
THE ROOT
וַיִּשְׁלַח
wayyishlach
GROWS FROM
שׁלח
Send forth; release; let go.
The verb וַיִּשְׁלַח (wayyishlach, “sent”) grows from שׁלח (shalach), which gathers sending and releasing. Here, release into motion is visibly accompanied: royal letters carry authority while captains and horsemen travel beside the crossing.
ALSO GROWS
shallach: “Send away” or “let go,” as in the command to Pharaoh.
שַׁלַּח
In Exodus 5:1, “Let my people go” uses this root: sending becomes the act that releases a people into movement.
Shiloach: “Sent”; John explains the pool’s name as “Sent.”
שִׁלֹחַ ; Σιλωάμ
John 9:7 links the name of the pool to a man who washes there and comes away seeing.
THE PATTERN
Sending releases movement and carries authority or deliverance beyond the sender.
And afterward Moses and Aaron went in and told the Great House, Thus says the LORD God of Israel, Let my people go, that they may dance a feast to me in the wilderness.I have awakened him in alignment, and all his ways I will make straight. He shall build my city, and he shall send out my exiles, not for price nor for bribe, says the LORD of hosts. Then Jesus said to them again, Wholeness be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.THE THREAD
And he said to him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, the Sent. So he went and washed, and came seeing. The king’s “sent” and the name Siloam reach back to שׁלח (shalach, “send” and “release”); John even glosses the pool’s name as “Sent.” There, the sent waters accompany the man’s washing and restored sight, echoing this verse’s image of a crossing accompanied on the way.
