This verse in the King James

King James wording
And next unto him repaired Shallum the son of Halohesh, the ruler of the half part of Jerusalem, he and his daughters.

Shallum, whose name carries the root of wholeness, strengthens Jerusalem alongside his daughters, making its repair a shared work.

The reader sees wholeness being restored through shared strengthening: the ruler and his daughters take part in the same work. The rebuilding of common life includes people whose labor might be overlooked if only titles are named.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

Only a titled man can carry the work of restoring a community. By naming Shallum’s daughters as participants, the verse gives their labor a place in the rebuilding.

שַׁלּוּם

Shallum

GROWS FROM

שלם

sh-l-m

Be complete or whole; make good or whole.

Shallum’s name carries the ⁨שׁלם⁩ (sh-l-m) family, whose branch ⁨שָׁלוֹם⁩ (shalom) means wholeness; Jerusalem’s name carries the same consonant pattern. The verse places that wholeness echo beside the strengthening of the city, with his daughters named in the work.

ALSO GROWS

shalom: Wholeness, completeness, well-being.

שָׁלוֹם

This branch brings out the direction of the work: Jerusalem is being strengthened toward wholeness.

shillem: Repay, make restitution, make good.

שִׁלֵּם

The root’s sense of making good connects wholeness with restoring what has been damaged or left incomplete.

הֶחֱזִיק

hecheziq

GROWS FROM

חזק

ḥ-z-q

Be strong; strengthen, hold firm.

“strengthened” in this verse is hecheziq. The Hebrew verb behind “repaired” also means to strengthen or hold firm. English can make repair sound like patching a defect; this root reveals the work as reinforcing what must hold, carried here by Shallum and his daughters.

ALSO GROWS

chazaq: Be strong, grow firm, take hold.

חָזַק

This branch shows repair as strength becoming firm in the place being restored.

chizzeq: Strengthen, reinforce.

חִזֵּק

It makes visible the work of making a shared structure hold fast.

Wholeness is rebuilt through shared participation, as different members bring their capacities to one common work.

The children of Israel brought a willing offering unto the LORD, every man and woman whose heart made them free-hearted to bring for all manner of work, which the LORD had commanded to be made by the hand of Moses.
Exodus 35:29 · SDVMen and women contribute to the work of making a shared dwelling, so the common work is carried by many willing hands.
And he began to speak with his whole voice in the synagogue. When Aquila and Priscilla heard him, they took him in and laid out for him more accurately the way of God.
Acts 18:26 · SDVAquila and Priscilla share their understanding to strengthen another person’s grasp of the way.
But much more those limbs of the body that seem to be weaker are needed.
1 Corinthians 12:22 · SDVThe body depends on members that seem less strong, making every part necessary to its wholeness.
Beside him Uzziel son of Harhaiah, of the gold-refiners, strengthened. Beside him also Hananiah son of one of the spice-mixers strengthened, and they left Jerusalem up to the wide wall.
Nehemiah 3:8 · SDV

Nehemiah 3:8 uses the same ⁨חזק⁩ (ḥ-z-q, “strengthen, hold firm”) root behind “repaired” in this verse, rendered here as “fortified.” Goldsmiths and an apothecary strengthen the same city, making Shallum’s family’s work part of a wider shared holding-together.
