King James wording
King James Version
And next to him repaired Ezer the son of Jeshua, the ruler of Mizpah, another piece over against the going up to the armoury at the turning of the wall.THE KEY
The wall regains strength one adjoining piece at a time, and this piece is repaired by Ezer, “Help”, at the wall’s turning.
THE MEANING
The verse meets you at the turn: what seems like a broken line can be strengthened one adjoining section at a time. Ezer (עֵזֶר, ʿēzer, “help”) names the aid present in the repair; Jeshua (יֵשׁוּעַ, Yēšūaʿ, “YHWH delivers”) carries deliverance in the worker’s lineage; and Mizpah (מִצְפָּה, Miṣpāh, “watchpoint”) names the place of watchfulness.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the belief that a small, unfinished piece cannot matter until the whole wall is restored.
THE ROOT
הֶחֱזִיק
heḥĕzîq
GROWS FROM
חזק
ḥ-z-q
Be strong; strengthen; hold fast.
“strengthened” in this verse is heḥĕzîq. English “repaired” can sound like replacing what is broken, while חזק carries the sense of strengthening and holding firm. Here repair restores continuity by making one adjoining piece strong enough to carry the wall’s line through its turn.
ALSO GROWS
ḥāzaq: Be strong, become firm.
חָזַק
The repaired piece is made firm, not merely put back in place.
maḥăzîq: One who holds fast or supports.
מַחֲזִיק
This branch gives repair the sense of holding a structure together.
עֵזֶר
ʿēzer
GROWS FROM
עזר
ʿ-z-r
Help, aid, support.
Ezer’s name is the word “help,” and he is the one strengthening a section of the wall. The name and the work meet in the same image: support becomes concrete in the piece that is repaired.
ALSO GROWS
ʿāzar: Help, support.
עָזַר
The verb names the aid enacted through the repair.
ʿezrāh: Help, assistance.
עֶזְרָה
This related form echoes the support carried by Ezer’s name.
יֵשׁוּעַ
Yēšūaʿ
GROWS FROM
ישע
y-š-ʿ
Deliver, bring out into safety and spaciousness.
Jeshua’s name carries the nature of deliverance. In this verse that name stands within the practical work of restoring a boundary, joining deliverance with the rebuilding that makes a way forward.
ALSO GROWS
yāšaʿ: Deliver, bring out to safety.
יָשַׁע
The root connects Jeshua’s name with deliverance.
yešūʿāh: Deliverance.
יְשׁוּעָה
This noun makes explicit the deliverance carried in the name.
THE PATTERN
A larger wholeness takes shape as distinct hands strengthen the parts that join together.
So we built the wall, and all the wall was tied together to half of it, for the people had heart to work.In whom the whole building, joined at the joints, grows into a set-apart temple in the Lord. For we are fellow workers with God. You are God's field; you are God's building.THE THREAD
Then I told them of the good hand of my God upon me, and also the king's words that he had spoken to me. And they said, "Let us rise and build." So they strengthened their hands for this good work. The same root חזק (ḥ-z-q), “strengthen, hold fast,” appears in “strengthened their hands” and “repaired” here. What begins as shared resolve becomes the firm, local work of strengthening one section at a time.
