This verse in the King James

King James wording
So built we the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof: for the people had a mind to work.

The wall is bound together halfway up because the people have their heart in the work.

A work can take coherent shape before it is complete. Here the wall is joined together halfway up, and the people’s heart is set on doing the work. Their shared resolve is already visible in what they build.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that a work cannot hold together until it is finished: halfway up, this wall is already joined.

וַתִּקָּשֵׁר

wattiqqāšēr

GROWS FROM

קשר

q-š-r

To bind, tie, or fasten together.

“tied together” in this verse is wattiqqāšēr. The Hebrew verb gives the wall’s joining the sense of binding: its parts are held together. The same root describes Jonathan’s soul being “knit” to David’s, linking the wall’s cohesion with the bond between people.

ALSO GROWS

qāšar: To bind, tie, or join.

קָשַׁר

This verb names the binding action that makes the wall cohere.

qešer: A bond or connection; also a conspiracy.

קֶשֶׁר

The noun carries the same idea of things bound together, whether the bond serves loyalty or a plot.

לֵב

lev

GROWS FROM

לבב

l-b-b

The heart or inner center, where thought, desire, and resolve meet.

English “mind” can sound like a plan or opinion, but the Hebrew says the people have a heart to do the work. Thought, desire, and readiness to act remain joined in that image.

ALSO GROWS

lev: Heart; the inner person.

לֵב

This is the word rendered “mind” here, retaining the heart’s sense of intention and resolve.

levav: Heart; inner self.

לֵבָב

This related form also names the inward center, showing that the people’s readiness belongs to their whole inner life, not merely to a plan.

Shared inward commitment gives separate contributions coherence before the whole work is complete.

And Moses called Bezaleel and Aholiab, and every wise-hearted man in whose heart the LORD had set wisdom, even every one whose heart lifted him to draw near to the work and make it.

1 Corinthians 3:9 · SDVThe image of God’s building joins a shared labor to a structure made through many workers.
from whom the whole body, joined together and knit by every joint that supplies, according to the working in the measure of each part, makes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.
Ephesians 4:16 · SDVEach part contributes its work, and that contribution binds the whole into a growing body.
And it came to pass, when he had finished speaking to Saul, that the living soul of Jonathan was bound to David's, and Jonathan loved him as his own living soul.
1 Samuel 18:1 · SDV

The Hebrew root translated “joined together” in Nehemiah is the same root rendered “knit” here. One binding image holds a wall together and describes the bond between two people.
