King James wording
King James Version
The Nethinims: the children of Ziha, the children of Hashupha, the children of Tabbaoth,THE KEY
A Nethinim is literally one of “the given ones”: beneath this terse list is the idea of people given a place within a community.
THE MEANING
You can belong to a larger whole without being erased by it: this line holds three family lines under one name and keeps each distinct. The Hebrew name Nethinim means “the given ones,” so belonging is expressed here as being placed within a people.
THE ROOT
הַנְּתִינִים
ha-netinim
GROWS FROM
נתן
Give, set, place.
The KJV keeps “Nethinims” as a label, while the Hebrew carries the sense “the given ones.” The same root can speak of giving a gift and placing someone within a community, joining what is given with where it is given a place.
ALSO GROWS
natan: To give, set, or place.
נָתַן
This verb makes the name’s underlying sense visible: the Nethinim are “the given ones.”
mattanah: Gift or present.
מַתָּנָה
This branch shows the same root in what is given, echoing how a person can be placed within a community’s shared life.
THE PATTERN
Communities take shape through people given distinct places and gifts within a shared life.
And I have given the Levites, given to Aaron and to his sons from among the children of Israel, to serve the serving of the children of Israel in the tent of meeting, and to cover the children of Israel, that there be no striking among the children of Israel when the children of Israel draw near to the set-apart place. But now God has set the limbs, each one of them, in the body, as he willed. As each has received a gift, serve it to one another as good stewards of the many-colored favor of God.THE THREAD
Also of the given ones, whom David and the princes had set for the serving of the Levites, two hundred and twenty; all of them were marked by name.Ezra uses the same name, “Nethinims,” and says they are “all of them … expressed by name.” The “given ones” are counted within a shared role while each person remains named.
