This verse in the King James

King James wording
And all the people gathered themselves together as one man into the street that was before the water gate; and they spake unto Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which the LORD had commanded to Israel.

The people are already one before they hear a word: they gather in the open place and ask for instruction to be brought among them.

The verse presents a people gathering as one and asking for instruction to be brought into their shared space. The book is not held at a distance; the people themselves call for it to be present among them. Shared attention becomes the setting for hearing.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the assumption that a shared encounter with instruction begins only when an authority summons people: here the people themselves gather and ask for the book.

נֶאֶסְפוּ

ne'esfu

GROWS FROM

אסף

To gather, collect, or bring in.

The same root names the ingathering of a harvest, so “gathered” carries the sense of drawing many into one collection. Here that collection stands “as one man” before instruction is brought.

ALSO GROWS

asif: Ingathering; harvest gathering.

אָסִיף

The harvest is brought in as a gathered whole, echoing the people assembled together.

ne'esaf: Was gathered in; was joined to his people.

נֶאֱסַף

This form appears in the phrase “gathered to his people,” extending gathering from a public assembly to being received into a people.

תּוֹרָה

torah

GROWS FROM

ירה

To point out or direct; in its instructional form, to teach.

The phrase “book of the law” also carries the root’s sense of instruction: direction that can be heard and learned. The people ask for this teaching to be brought into their midst.

ALSO GROWS

moreh: Teacher; instructor.

מוֹרֶה

The teacher is one who directs or instructs, bringing out the teaching sense carried by torah.

horah: To instruct, point out, or direct.

הוֹרָה

This verb form makes explicit the act of giving direction that the book of torah contains.

רְחוֹב

rechov

GROWS FROM

רחב

To be broad or wide.

“broad place” in this verse is rechov. The Hebrew word for “street” carries the sense of a broad, open place. The people gather in a setting whose word-shape holds spaciousness and public access.

ALSO GROWS

rachav: Broad; wide.

רָחָב

This verb names the breadth contained in rechov.

merchav: A broad place; open space.

מֶרְחָב

This related noun makes the spacious sense of the gathering place more visible.

A people becomes one by gathering around instruction they are ready to hear.

Assemble the people, the men, the women, and the little ones, and the sojourner within your gates, so that they may hear and respond, and so that they may learn, and be struck with awe of the LORD your God, and guard to do all the words of this instruction;
Deuteronomy 31:12 · SDVThe people are gathered together so that everyone can hear and learn the instruction.
And many peoples shall go and say, Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob, and he will aim us along his ways, and we will walk in his paths, for out of Zion the instruction shall go forth, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
Isaiah 2:3 · SDVPeople move together toward teaching that goes out from the shared place of encounter.
So when they were let go, they went down to Antioch, and when they had gathered the crowd together, they handed over the letter.
Acts 15:30 · SDVThe gathered multitude receives a written word brought into their common space.
Assemble the people, the men, the women, and the little ones, and the sojourner within your gates, so that they may hear and respond, and so that they may learn, and be struck with awe of the LORD your God, and guard to do all the words of this instruction;
Deuteronomy 31:12 · SDV

Deuteronomy uses the same word ⁨תּוֹרָה⁩ (torah, instruction) and links gathering directly to hearing and learning. Together, the verses reveal that assembling as one is part of receiving the instruction.
