This verse in the King James

King James wording
Now in the twenty and fourth day of this month the children of Israel were assembled with fasting, and with sackclothes, and earth upon them.

The soil on their bodies is adamah, the ground echoed in adam, the human, so their gathering wears humanity’s origin.

A people gather with fasting, sackcloth, and soil on their bodies; their shared posture makes grief visible. That soil is adamah, the ground bound by name to adam, the human, so their bodies carry the ground from which human life is formed.

אֲדָמָה

adamah

GROWS FROM

א־ד־ם

ʾ-d-m

The root carries the sense of redness; adamah means ground or soil, and its word-family echoes adam, the human.

English “earth” hides the echo between adamah, the soil, and adam, the human. The people wear the ground that is named within humanity itself.

ALSO GROWS

adam: human

אָדָם

Genesis 2:7 places adam beside adamah: the human is formed from the ground.

adom: red

אָדֹם

This related form preserves the root’s color sense beside the physical soil resting on their bodies.

Scripture keeps human life bound to the ground from which it is formed and to which it returns.

And the LORD God shaped the ground-being, Adam, from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and Adam became a living soul.
Genesis 2:7 · SDVThe human is formed from the ground, making the adam–adamah echo in Nehemiah visible.
In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, until you turn back to the ground, for from it you were taken. For dust you are, and to dust you shall turn back.
Genesis 3:19 · SDVThe ground marks both human origin and return.
The first human is of the ground, made of dust; the second human is the Lord from the heavens.
1 Corinthians 15:47 · SDVThe verse names the first human as belonging to the earth.
And the LORD God shaped the ground-being, Adam, from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and Adam became a living soul.
Genesis 2:7 · SDV

Genesis 2:7 uses adamah, the same word for ground that appears beneath “earth” here. Its echo with adam, the human, makes the soil on their bodies an image of human life’s ground-shaped nature.
