This verse in the King James

King James wording
Neither have our kings, our princes, our priests, nor our fathers, kept thy law, nor hearkened unto thy commandments and thy testimonies, wherewith thou didst testify against them.

Instruction left undone does not go silent; its testimony stands as a witness against those who ignore it.

Authority and inheritance do not, by themselves, make instruction active: the measure is whether it takes form in action and receives real attention. When instruction is ignored, its testimony remains as a witness to the gap between what is given and what is done. The verse speaks now wherever closeness to sacred teaching is mistaken for having lived it.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that possessing or inheriting instruction is the same as living it; here the failure is visible in what is left undone and unattended.

עָשׂוּ תּוֹרָתֶךָ

ʿāśû tôrateḵā

GROWS FROM

עשה

do, make, act

“kept thy law” in this verse is ʿāśû tôrateḵā. The Hebrew verb rendered “kept” is asah, “do” or “make,” so the line carries instruction into action. Its branches name deeds and work, placing the measure in what is actually done.

ALSO GROWS

maʿaseh: deed, work, or act

מַעֲשֶׂה

This branch makes the connection between instruction and lived action explicit.

ʿoseh: one who does or makes

עֹשֶׂה

It brings the root’s action into the person who carries it out.

עֵדְוֹתֶיךָ

ʿēḏwōṯeḵā

GROWS FROM

עוּד

bear witness, testify, attest

“testimonies / didst testify” in this verse is ʿēḏwōṯeḵā. The Hebrew pairs the testimonies with the act of testifying through the same witness word-family. What is ignored remains a witness that names the failure to heed it.

ALSO GROWS

ʿēd: witness

עֵד

The ignored instruction functions as a witness to what has been left undone.

ʿēḏût: testimony or attestation

עֵדוּת

This branch names the testimonies the verse says were not heeded.

Instruction bears fruit as attentive hearing becomes enacted practice; ignored testimony exposes the gap.

You shall guard closely the commandments of the LORD your God, and his testimonies, and his statutes, which he has commanded you.
Deuteronomy 6:17 · SDVIt holds commanded instruction and testimony together with the practice of keeping them.
That they might set their loins upon God, and not forget the works of God, but guard his commands.
Psalm 78:7 · SDVIt ties remembering God’s works to keeping the commandments, joining attention with practice.
But be makers of the word, and not hearers only, miscounting yourselves.
James 1:22 · SDVIt makes the gap between hearing instruction and acting on it plain.
And Moses called all Israel, and said to them, Hear and respond, O Israel, to the statutes and the judgments which I speak in your ears this day, that you may learn them, and guard them, and do them.
Deuteronomy 5:1 · SDV

The Hebrew verb behind Nehemiah’s “kept” is ⁨עשה⁩ (asah), “do” or “make”; Deuteronomy closes its sequence of hearing and learning with “keep, and do them.” The shared root makes the confession concrete: the gap lies between instruction received and instruction enacted.
