What Does Nehemiah 9:6 Mean?

You, even you, are the LORD alone. You made the heavens, the heavens of the heavens, with all their host, the earth and all that is in it, the seas and all that is in them, and you keep them all alive. And the host of the heavens bows down to you.

This verse in the King James

King James wording
Thou, even thou, art LORD alone; thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and all that is therein, and thou preservest them all; and the host of heaven worshippeth thee.

The one who brings all things into being continues to give them life.

Your life is held within the Creator’s continuing gift: the LORD makes all things and keeps them living now. The heavens, earth, and seas depend on this one source, and the host of heaven bows before the one who gives life.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the belief that creation is a one-time act after which life sustains itself; what lives still depends on its source.

מְחַיֶּה

mechayyeh

GROWS FROM

חיה

To live or be alive; in this form, to give or keep alive.

“keep them all alive” in this verse is mechayyeh. The word translated “preservest” comes from ⁨חיה⁩, the root for living. The verse joins creation to ongoing life-giving: the world is not simply made and then left to sustain itself.

ALSO GROWS

chai: Living; alive

חַי

The same root names the state of being alive that the LORD continually sustains.

chayyim: Life

חַיִּים

The root’s noun for life shares the seed of the verb: what is preserved is life itself.

chayyah: Living creature; animal

חַיָּה

This branch carries the root into the living beings whose life depends on its source.

מִשְׁתַּחֲוִים

mishtachavim

GROWS FROM

שחה

To bow down or stoop.

“bows down to you” in this verse is mishtachavim. The host’s worship is expressed through a word for bowing down. The Hebrew preserves the posture inside what English can make sound like an inward feeling alone.

ALSO GROWS

shachah: To bow down

שָׁחָה

This is the root action beneath the host’s response to the LORD.

hishtachavah: To bow oneself down

הִשְׁתַּחֲוָה

This related form keeps the one bowing within the action, making the posture concrete.

Creation remains dependent on the one who gives it life.

You send out your breath, and they are created; you renew the face of the ground.
Psalm 104:30 · SDVCreation and renewal appear together: life begins and the earth is renewed through what God sends forth.
Who, being the radiance of his weight and the exact stamp of his foundation, carrying all things by the word of his power, when he had made the cleansing of shortcomings, sat down at the right hand of the Greatness on high.
Hebrews 1:3 · SDVThe verse describes all things as continually upheld, echoing Nehemiah’s picture of creation sustained by its source.
For in him we live and move and are; as some of your own makers have said, for we are also his offspring.
Acts 17:28 · SDVHuman life and movement exist within God, extending the same dependence from all creation to each person.
And the LORD God shaped the ground-being, Adam, from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and Adam became a living soul.
Genesis 2:7 · SDV

The “life” in Genesis comes from ⁨חיה⁩, the same root behind “preservest” in Nehemiah. The shared root opens the line from life given to one human to life continually sustained throughout creation.
