King James wording
King James Version
But the Levites shall pitch round about the tabernacle of testimony, that there be no wrath upon the congregation of the children of Israel: and the Levites shall keep the charge of the tabernacle of testimony.THE KEY
“Keep” and “charge” grow from the same Hebrew root: protection is a watch held around the testimony.
THE MEANING
The verse shows protection taking shape as a watchful boundary around the testimony: the Levites stand around it and carry its keeping, so wrath does not fall on the congregation. The whole community is held within a structure of care, with responsibility assigned rather than left to chance.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that everyone must approach the sacred in the same way: here, a designated watch holds the boundary for the congregation’s safety.
THE ROOT
וְשָׁמְרוּ
veshamru
GROWS FROM
שמר
To guard, watch over, or keep.
English makes “keep” the action and “charge” the assignment, but both forms come from שמר (shamar, to guard or watch over): the duty is itself a guarding watch. Here that watch forms a protective perimeter around the testimony, holding danger at the boundary so it does not fall on the congregation.
ALSO GROWS
shomer: Keeper or guardian.
שֹׁמֵר
The Levites act as guardians around the tabernacle, making the root’s watchful role visible.
mishmeret: Guard duty, watch, or charge.
מִשְׁמֶרֶת
This is the word translated “charge”; it names the guarding responsibility that belongs to the same root as “keep.”
THE PATTERN
A community is protected when what is entrusted to it is held in watchful care.
And you shall keep the watch of the set-apart place, and the watch of the altar, so that no cutting off falls again upon the children of Israel. But if I am slow, so that you may see how one must turn about in the house of God, which is the assembly of the living God, a pillar and seat of the truth.Guard the good thing placed beside you, through the Set-Apart Breath which makes its home in us.THE THREAD
And the LORD God took Adam and set him down in the garden of Eden, to serve it and to guard it.The same root שמר (shamar, to guard or keep) names humanity’s keeping of the garden and the Levites’ charge around the tabernacle. In both verses, watchful care preserves a sacred place.
