King James wording
King James Version
And the cloud of the LORD was upon them by day, when they went out of the camp.THE KEY
The cloud does not end at the edge of camp; the LORD’s covering is over them as they set out.
THE MEANING
The LORD’s cloud is over you as you leave camp. The presence that covers you in one place accompanies you into the next stretch; guidance remains with you in motion.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie this undoes is that leaving a familiar place means losing the LORD’s covering.
THE ROOT
בְּנָסְעָם
bənosʿām
GROWS FROM
נסע
To set out, depart, or journey.
“pulled up from the camp” in this verse is bənosʿām. The Hebrew verb behind “went out” is nasaʿ, the language of setting out on a journey. Its word family also names the journey-stages themselves, so the cloud is over them in transit: the covering belongs to the movement, not only to the camp.
ALSO GROWS
massaʿ: A journey or stage of travel.
מַסָּע
The cloud stays with the route itself, not only the place where movement begins.
masʿei: Journeys or stages of travel.
מַסְעֵי
This plural form names an ongoing sequence of departures, matching the verse’s movement away from camp under continuing cover.
THE PATTERN
The LORD’s covering remains with the people through movement, giving direction and shelter along the way.
And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of cloud, to lead them on the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to shine for them; to go by day and night. He spread a cloud for a covering, and fire to shine in the night. Now, brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all of them passed through the sea.THE THREAD
And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of cloud, to lead them on the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to shine for them; to go by day and night. The word for “cloud” is the same Hebrew עָנָן (ʿānān) in both verses. Numbers places it over them as they set out; Exodus shows it going before them to lead, so the covering itself guides them in motion.
