King James wording
King James Version
These are the names of the men which Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Oshea the son of Nun Jehoshua.THE KEY
Before the land is inspected, the scout’s name already says who delivers.
THE MEANING
The renaming makes deliverance explicit: Hoshea becomes Yehoshua, “the LORD delivers.” The reader meets the land’s approach under a name that carries deliverance’s source within it. That name is present before the scouts report what they see.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the assumption that a name is merely a label: here, the name carries the source of deliverance.
THE ROOT
יְהוֹשֻׁעַ
Yehoshua
GROWS FROM
ישע
yasha
Deliver, bringing out from constriction into spaciousness.
“Jehoshua, the LORD's deliverance” in this verse is Yehoshua. Hoshea already carries the sense of deliverance; Yehoshua adds the divine name, declaring “the LORD delivers.” Before the scouts describe the land, the verse gives the reader a name that holds deliverance and its source together.
ALSO GROWS
Hoshea: He delivers; deliverance.
הוֹשֵׁעַ
This is the name Moses changes, so the verse makes the movement from Hoshea to Yehoshua visible.
Yeshua: Deliverance; the LORD delivers.
יֵשׁוּעַ
This related form carries the same deliverance-root that remains audible in Yehoshua.
moshia: Deliverer; one who brings rescue.
מוֹשִׁיעַ
This branch names the one who acts in the way Yehoshua’s name declares.
וַיִּשְׁלַח
wayyishlach
GROWS FROM
שלח
shalach
Send forth, release, let go.
The scouts are sent forth toward the land, while the name Yehoshua carries the deeper movement of deliverance. The same root also extends into the image of provision laid out, opening a connection between being sent and what is set before someone.
ALSO GROWS
shaliach: Messenger; one who is sent.
שְׁלִיחַ
This branch makes the sent scouts’ role clear: they carry what they see back to the people.
shulchan: Table.
שֻׁלְחָן
The table is what is extended and set out; it echoes the root’s movement of sending forth and providing.
Shiloach: Sent forth; a name associated with waters and a pool.
שִׁלֹחַ
This branch keeps the root’s sense of sending and release connected with restoration.
THE PATTERN
A name can carry the nature of what is promised before its fulfillment is visible.
No longer shall your name be called Abram, but Abraham, father of multitudes, for I have set you as a father of many nations. And he led him to Jesus. And Jesus, fixing his gaze on him, said, You are Simon, son of John. You will be called Cephas, the rock. And she will bring forth a son, and you will call his name Jesus, the LORD's deliverance, for he will deliver his people from their missing.THE THREAD
For if Joshua had settled them, he would not afterward have spoken of another day.The Greek form behind “Jesus” here is Ἰησοῦς (Iēsous), which also renders Yehoshua, the name given to the scout in Numbers. Hebrews says this named deliverer did not bring the people into their final rest, opening the name’s promise beyond the scout’s own role.
