This verse in the King James

King James wording
And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

Before the saying is revealed, the verse shows that the word begins as an address between speaker and hearer.

Speech reaches Moses as a direct address. The verse lets you stand at the instant before the message is disclosed, where the encounter is already present. Moses’ name carries the sense of one drawn out, now receiving the word spoken to him.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the belief that a word is only an idea or sound: here it arrives between one who speaks and one who hears.

וַיְדַבֵּר

wayədabbēr

GROWS FROM

ד־ב־ר

d-b-r

To speak or declare; the same root also forms a word for a matter or thing.

“spoke” in this verse is wayədabbēr. The verb for speaking and the noun for a word or matter grow from the same root. Hebrew holds utterance and what is spoken close together, so the LORD’s speech is presented as an address with substance, not detached sound.

ALSO GROWS

dāḇār: Word; matter or thing.

דָּבָר

This noun shares the root of “spake,” joining the act of speaking with the word or matter spoken.

devarim: Words; matters or things.

דְּבָרִים

Its plural form keeps the same joined sense: words can also be matters under discussion.

מֹשֶׁה

Mōšeh

GROWS FROM

מ־שׁ־ה

m-sh-h

To draw out, as in the biblical explanation of Moses’ name.

The verse names Moses as the one drawn out, and places him here as the one receiving speech. His name carries a story of being brought out; this line shows him addressed.

ALSO GROWS

māšāh: To draw out.

מָשָׁה

This verb supplies the name’s sense, “drawn out.”

mešîtihû: I drew him out.

מְשִׁיתִהוּ

This form appears in the explanation of Moses’ name and makes the act of drawing out explicit.

A divine word arrives as an address that can be heard and received.

And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light.
Genesis 1:3 · SDVThe spoken word is followed by the reality named in it.
Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
Jeremiah 1:4 · SDVThe same root presents the word as something that reaches a hearer.
So then trust comes out of hearing, and hearing comes through the word of God.
Romans 10:17 · SDVHere, hearing the word is the way trust comes.
Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
Jeremiah 1:4 · SDV

“Spake” and “word” share the Hebrew root ⁨ד־ב־ר⁩ (d-b-r): one is the act of speaking, the other the word or matter spoken. Jeremiah’s verse makes that word feel like an arrival to a hearer, opening the same movement already present here.
