King James wording
King James Version
And the children of Israel spake unto Moses, saying, Behold, we die, we perish, we all perish.THE KEY
The Hebrew moves from death to lostness, then repeats lostness as the fate of everyone.
THE MEANING
When danger closes around you, fear can turn possibility into certainty: you are dying, you are lost, everyone is lost. The repeated “we” shows how fear spreads through a group until no one can imagine an exception.
THE ROOT
אָבַדְנוּ
ʾāvadnû
GROWS FROM
אבד
ʾ-b-d
To be lost, perish, or disappear.
The first verb is גָּוַע (gāvaʿ, “to die”), then the verse shifts to אָבַד (ʾāvad, “to be lost, perish”) and repeats it for “all of us.” The movement gives the fear two dimensions: death and the loss of everyone.
ALSO GROWS
ʾavēdāh: A lost thing; something missing.
אֲבֵדָה
This branch makes the root’s sense of perishing also a sense of being lost.
ʾavaddôn: Destruction or ruin.
אֲבַדּוֹן
This branch names the endpoint of loss, intensifying the group’s repeated declaration.
גָּוַעְנוּ
gāvaʿnû
GROWS FROM
גוע
g-w-ʿ
To die, to come to an end.
“breathe our last” in this verse is gāvaʿnû. This is the first declaration: “we die.” The same root returns in the next verse as the people ask whether they will be consumed with dying, turning a fearful verdict into a question.
ALSO GROWS
gāvaʿ: To die; to come to an end.
גָּוַע
This is the root form behind the group’s first statement of death.
ligvoaʿ: To die; dying.
לִגְוֹעַ
The infinitive appears in Numbers 17:13, carrying the same fear into the next verse.
THE PATTERN
A perceived threat can expand from personal danger into the possible loss of everyone.
And all Israel who were around them fled at the sound of their voice, for they said, Lest the earth swallow us also.So the master of the ropes came to him and said to him, What are you doing, sleeper? Rise, call upon your God. Perhaps God will think of us, so that we do not perish.Nor do you reckon that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation should not perish.THE THREAD
Whoever draws near, draws near to the dwelling of the LORD, shall die. Shall we be used up in breathing our last? The next verse repeats גוע (gāvaʿ, “to die”) in the phrase “consumed with dying.” The declaration here becomes a question there: the group is trying to understand whether nearness to the LORD’s dwelling means death.
