King James wording
King James Version
And it shall come to pass, that the man’s rod, whom I shall choose, shall blossom: and I will make to cease from me the murmurings of the children of Israel, whereby they murmur against you.THE KEY
The blossom turns God’s hidden choice into visible life, and the sight of it quiets the accusation.
THE MEANING
This verse meets the reader in the space between a contested claim and visible evidence: the chosen rod blossoms. God says he will quiet the recurring accusations against Moses by bringing life into view. The complaint does not get the final word.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The loudest accusation does not decide what is true; here, the chosen rod is recognized by the life God brings forth.
THE ROOT
וְיִפְרָח
wəyip̄raḥ
GROWS FROM
פרח
to sprout, blossom, break into bloom
“burst forth” in this verse is wəyip̄raḥ. English “blossom” can sound like a decorative flourish, but פרח names growth breaking forth. The rod’s bloom makes the hidden choice visible: life appears where there was only a staff.
ALSO GROWS
peraḥ: flower, blossom
פֶּרַח
The noun names the visible form of the same breaking-forth that the rod performs.
pāraḥ: to sprout or blossom
פָּרַח
This verb is the root’s action: the staff becomes a sign through growth, not through a spoken claim.
מַטֵּה
maṭṭeh
GROWS FROM
נטה
to stretch out, extend, incline
The word for “rod” also names a tribe, so each staff represents a whole house. The sign concerns which house is chosen, not merely which object flowers.
ALSO GROWS
nāṭâ: to stretch out, extend, incline
נָטָה
This verb is the root associated with מַטֵּה, linking the staff to something extended or held out.
maṭṭeh: rod, staff; also tribe
מַטֶּה
The same word can name the staff and the tribal group it represents, making the blossom a public sign of the chosen house.
תְּלֻנּוֹת
təlunnōt
GROWS FROM
לון
to lodge, remain overnight
“murmurings” in this verse is təlunnōt. The Hebrew word for these complaints carries the sense of something that lodges or persists. The verse presents the blossom as an answer to grievances that have kept returning.
ALSO GROWS
lûn: to lodge, remain overnight
לוּן
The root’s sense of staying gives the complaints a lingering quality beyond a momentary sound.
təlûnāh: complaint, murmuring
תְּלוּנָה
This related noun names the grievance that persists and that God says will cease.
THE PATTERN
Life emerging from what looks cut down or barren becomes a visible sign of God’s work.
And a shoot will come out of the stump of Jesse, and a sprout from his roots will bear fruit. And all the trees of the field shall perceive that I the LORD have brought low the high tree, have lifted up the low tree, have dried up the moist tree, and have made the dry tree bloom. I the LORD have spoken and have done it.Truly, truly, I say to you. Unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone. But if it dies, it bears much fruit.THE THREAD
And it came to pass that on the morrow Moses went into the tent of witness, and behold, the staff of Aaron for the house of Levi had burst forth, and brought out buds, and bloomed blossoms, and ripened almonds. The same root פרח appears in both verses: the rod “shall blossom” in verse 5, and Aaron’s rod “bloomed blossoms” in verse 8. The next verse opens that single sign into a sequence of budding, flowering, and fruit-bearing.
