King James wording
King James Version
And Moses brought out all the rods from before the LORD unto all the children of Israel: and they looked, and took every man his rod.THE KEY
In Hebrew, the word for each man’s “rod” can also mean “tribe,” so each receives back a staff that carries his house’s identity.
THE MEANING
Each man sees the rods after the LORD’s sign is made and takes his own back. The distinction remains visible, while each man retains the rod that marks his house. The verse holds public choosing and personal belonging in the same gesture.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A visible choosing means everyone else loses their place.
THE ROOT
מַטֶּה
matteh
GROWS FROM
נטה
natah
To stretch out, extend, or incline.
“staffs” in this verse is matteh. Matteh (מַטֶּה, matteh) can mean both a rod or staff and a tribe. Each man’s returned staff therefore carries the identity of his house, so the act of taking it back restores more than an object.
ALSO GROWS
matteh: Rod, staff; also tribe.
מַטֶּה
This is the word used for the rods and the same word that can name the tribes they represent.
natah: Stretch out, extend, or incline.
נָטָה
This verb is the root behind matteh; the staff carries the image of something extended into the hand.
THE PATTERN
A carried staff can become a visible witness to authority or choice that is otherwise unseen.
And the LORD said to him, What is that in your hand? And he said, A rod.And it came to pass that on the morrow Moses went into the tent of witness, and behold, the staff of Aaron for the house of Levi had burst forth, and brought out buds, and bloomed blossoms, and ripened almonds.Which holds the golden censer and the ark of the covenant, covered on every side with gold, and in it the golden jar holding the manna, Aaron's rod that sprouted, and the flat stones of the covenant.THE THREAD
And the LORD said to him, What is that in your hand? And he said, A rod.The Hebrew word translated “rod” in both verses is מַטֶּה (matteh), which can also mean “tribe.” In Exodus it rests in Moses’ hand; here each man takes back the staff associated with his house.
