This verse in the King James

King James wording
And whatsoever the unclean person toucheth shall be unclean; and the soul that toucheth it shall be unclean until even.

Touch is the verse’s transmission route: uncleanness moves from person to object to the next person who touches it.

The verse shows uncleanness moving through contact: it passes from the unclean person to what is touched, and then to the person who touches it. That person’s uncleanness lasts until evening.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that uncleanness stays contained in one person: here, contact carries it to what is touched and onward to another person.

הַנֹּגַעַת

hannōgaʿat

GROWS FROM

נגע

to touch, reach, or strike

“touches” in this verse is hannōgaʿat. English can make touch sound like neutral contact, but this root also names a stroke or affliction: contact is something that reaches and affects. Here that force moves along a chain, from person to object to another person, while “until evening” marks a limit.

ALSO GROWS

negaʿ: stroke, affliction, or plague

נֶגַע

This noun from the same root connects touching with impact: what is reached can be affected.

nāgûaʿ: stricken or afflicted

נָגוּעַ

This form describes one who has been reached by an impact, showing how the root extends from contact to the resulting condition.

Contact carries a condition across the boundary between toucher and touched: impurity can spread, while cleansing can move the other way.

Or if a living soul touches anything unclean, whether it is the fallen body of a living creature, or of livestock, or of swarming things, and it is hidden from him; he also is unclean, and guilty.
Leviticus 5:2 · SDVTouching an unclean thing passes its condition to the person, extending the same contact chain.
Then Haggai said, If one who is unclean by a corpse touches any of these, shall it be unclean? And the priests answered and said, It shall be unclean.
Haggai 2:13 · SDVThe priests confirm that uncleanness passes through contact with what has been touched.
And Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, I will. Be clean. And straightway his leprosy was cleansed.
Matthew 8:3 · SDVThe contact pattern turns in the other direction: Jesus touches the afflicted man, and cleansing follows.
Then Haggai said, If one who is unclean by a corpse touches any of these, shall it be unclean? And the priests answered and said, It shall be unclean.
Haggai 2:13 · SDV

Haggai makes the contact logic explicit as a question and answer: does uncleanness pass through touching? The same Hebrew verb ⁨נָגַע⁩ (nāgaʿ, “touch, reach, or strike”) anchors both passages, placing the movement in the contact itself.
