King James wording
King James Version
And by him shall be the tribe of Manasseh: and the captain of the children of Manasseh shall be Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur.THE KEY
The word for Manasseh’s captain grows from “lift and carry”: here, leadership is named as bearing a people.
THE MEANING
You are not invisible inside a larger whole: the tribe has a place, a captain, and a family line. The captain’s title carries the sense of bearing, while Manasseh’s name carries the sense of forgetting. The verse holds both in one ordered whole: what is carried and what falls out of memory still has a place.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie this verse undoes is that forgetting, or belonging to a larger whole, makes you disappear: Manasseh is named, placed, and given a captain.
THE ROOT
נָשִׂיא
nasi
GROWS FROM
נשא
Lift, carry, bear (nasa).
“the lifted one” in this verse is nasi. The Hebrew title נָשִׂיא (nasi, captain or chief) shares its root with the act of lifting and carrying. English gives the role a rank; Hebrew also lets you hear the bearing inside it.
ALSO GROWS
nasa: to lift, carry, or bear
נָשָׂא
This verb shares the root’s consonants and makes the action inside the captain’s title plain.
nose: one who carries or bears
נֹשֵׂא
This form names the bearer, opening the title toward the image of one who carries responsibility for the people.
מְנַשֶּׁה
Menasheh
GROWS FROM
נשה
Forget or be unmindful (nashah); in the name’s causative form, make forget.
“Manasseh” in this verse is Menasheh. In Genesis 41:51, Joseph explains the name מְנַשֶּׁה (Menasheh) with נַשַּׁנִי (nashani, “he made me forget”), his toil falls out of memory. Here the tribe bearing that name is still placed and counted, so forgetting does not erase its place.
ALSO GROWS
nashani: he made me forget
נַשַּׁנִי
This form from the same root explains the name Manasseh in Genesis 41:51.
teshi: you are unmindful; you forget
תְּשִׁי
Deuteronomy 32:18 uses this form for forgetting the Rock who gave life, letting the root echo beside the name Pedahzur, “Rock has delivered.”
גַּמְלִיאֵל
Gamliel
GROWS FROM
גמל
Deal with, requite, or recompense (gamal).
“Gamaliel” in this verse is Gamliel. גַּמְלִיאֵל (Gamliel) joins גמל (gamal, to deal or recompense) with אֵל (El, God); the name is commonly understood as “God has recompensed” or “God’s recompense.” Beside Manasseh, whose name carries forgetting, the captain’s own name carries the language of God’s dealing.
ALSO GROWS
gamal: to deal with or recompense
גָּמַל
This verb shares the name’s root and makes its sense of dealing or requiting audible.
gemul: recompense; what is dealt out
גְּמוּל
This noun from the same consonants lets the recompense within Gamaliel’s name come into view.
THE PATTERN
A larger whole becomes legible when each part has a place and a named responsibility.
And Moses chose men of strength out of all Israel, and set them as heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens. But now God has set the limbs, each one of them, in the body, as he willed. For just as we have many limbs in one body, and not all the limbs have the same deed.THE THREAD
You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I lifted you on the wings of eagles, and brought you to myself.Numbers calls Manasseh’s chief a נָשִׂיא (nasi, captain), from נשא (nasa, to lift or carry). In Exodus, “I bare you” uses that same root: the title of leadership opens into the image of carrying a people toward belonging.
