King James wording
King James Version
And the angel of the LORD said unto Balaam, Go with the men: but only the word that I shall speak unto thee, that thou shalt speak. So Balaam went with the princes of Balak.THE KEY
In Hebrew, “the word” Balaam receives and “speak” what he is given share one root: the message and the mouth that carries it are bound together.
THE MEANING
When a way opens before you, permission to move does not make every word yours to choose; what you say remains bounded by what has been spoken to you. The verse holds motion and constraint together: go with them, yet speak only the word given.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
An open path means an unrestricted voice; this verse separates permission to go from permission to alter the message.
THE ROOT
הַדָּבָר
ha-davar
GROWS FROM
דבר
d-b-r
To speak, say, or declare; the related noun דָּבָר (davar) means “word,” “matter,” or “thing.”
In Hebrew, הַדָּבָר (ha-davar, “the word”) and תְדַבֵּר (tedabber, “you shall speak”) share the root דבר (d-b-r, “speak”). English separates the received message from the act of speaking, while Hebrew binds them: Balaam’s speech carries only the word given to him.
ALSO GROWS
tedabber: You shall speak.
תְדַבֵּר
This verb appears in the verse itself, from the same root as “the word”; what Balaam says is tied to what he receives.
davar: Word, matter, or thing.
דָּבָר
The word can also name the matter being spoken, joining the message to what it carries.
THE PATTERN
The entrusted word sets the boundary of the messenger’s speech.
And now go, and I will be with your mouth, and I will teach you what you will speak. But the LORD said to me, Do not say, I am a youth, for to all that I send you, you shall go, and whatever I command you, you shall speak. For it is not you who speak, but the breath of your Father speaking in you.THE THREAD
And he answered and said, Must I not keep watch to speak what the LORD has set in my mouth? The phrase “to speak” here comes from לְדַבֵּר (ledabber, “to speak”), sharing the root דבר (d-b-r, “speak”) with “the word” in Numbers 22:35. What Balaam receives does not end at hearing; it is the very matter his mouth is allowed to carry.
