King James wording
King James Version
And Balaam said unto Balak, Stand by thy burnt offering, and I will go: peradventure the LORD will come to meet me: and whatsoever he sheweth me I will tell thee. And he went to an high place.THE KEY
The burnt offering is named for ascent, yet ascent cannot script what the LORD will show.
THE MEANING
A prepared offering gives Balaam a place to wait, not power to guarantee the encounter: the LORD may meet him and may show him something. What is spoken follows what is disclosed; the witness does not author the message. The uncertainty remains even at the high place.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse undoes the belief that a sacred act can compel a divine answer or predetermine what that answer will be.
THE ROOT
יַרְאֵנִי
yarʾēnî
GROWS FROM
ראה
r-ʾ-h
To see, perceive, or appear; in this causative form, יַרְאֵנִי (yarʾēnî) means “he shows me,” literally “he causes me to see.”
“sheweth” in this verse is yarʾēnî. The Hebrew makes showing an act of causing someone to see. The same root names both the vision and the seer, so the verse links disclosure to sight before it becomes speech.
ALSO GROWS
marʾāh: Vision, appearance.
מַרְאָה
This same seeing-root names the vision through which disclosure comes in Numbers 12:6.
roʾeh: Seer; one who sees.
רֹאֶה
The root names the receiver as one who sees, keeping perception at the start of the witness’s report.
עֹלָה
ʿōlāh
GROWS FROM
עלה
ʿ-l-h
To rise, ascend, or go up; עֹלָה (ʿōlāh) is the offering associated with rising or ascent.
“rising offering” in this verse is ʿōlāh. The offering’s name keeps the motion of rising inside the ritual term. Set beside Balaam’s move to a high place, upward movement gathers around the uncertain encounter, but does not command it.
ALSO GROWS
ʿaliyyāh: Ascent; going up.
עֲלִיָּה
This noun preserves the upward movement carried by the offering’s name.
maʿalāh: Ascent; steps or degrees.
מַעֲלָה
This related form keeps the root’s sense of rising visible as a path or elevation.
THE PATTERN
A witness speaks from what is first disclosed, so reception precedes testimony.
And he said, Now hear and respond to my words. If there is a prophet among you, I, the LORD, will make myself known to him in sight, and will speak to him in a dream. Then the LORD stretched out his hand and touched my mouth. And the LORD said to me, Look, I have set my words in your mouth. For we cannot keep from speaking what we have perceived and heard.THE THREAD
And the LORD appeared again in Shiloh, for the LORD uncovered himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the LORD.Balaam’s “sheweth” comes from ראה (raʾāh), “to see”; here the same root says that the LORD “appeared” to Samuel. One verse makes Balaam the one caused to see, while the other describes the LORD appearing, the same root of sight opening into disclosure.
