King James wording
King James Version
And of Shemida, the family of the Shemidaites: and of Hepher, the family of the Hepherites.THE KEY
A census can count a people together while preserving each family branch under its own name.
THE MEANING
Belonging to a larger whole does not erase what makes a family line particular. This verse keeps its ancestors and the clans carried through their lines visible within the count.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that being counted among many means becoming indistinguishable.
THE ROOT
חֵפֶר
Ḥēpher
GROWS FROM
חפר
To dig or excavate; the name is commonly linked to this root, though the derivation of proper names is uncertain.
“Hepher” in this verse is Ḥēpher. The root holds both the act of digging and the image of an excavation. Here the ancestor’s name also becomes a family designation, carrying a particular name forward into the wider count.
ALSO GROWS
ḥāphar: To dig, bore, or search out.
חָפַר
The verb gives the root’s concrete action: opening the ground to what lies beneath.
ḥēpher: A pit or excavation.
חֵפֶר
The noun names the opening made by digging and is commonly associated with the ancestor’s name.
THE PATTERN
A people remains legible across generations through its named family lines.
These are the heads of their fathers' houses. The sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel, were Hanoch, and Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi. These are the families of Reuben. And I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse, and in you all the families of the ground will be blessed. So all the births from Abraham to David are fourteen; from David to the carrying from their dwelling to Babylon, fourteen; and from that carrying to the anointed one, fourteen births.THE THREAD
Then came the daughters of Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of Manasseh, the son of Joseph, and these are the names of his daughters, Mahlah, Noah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Tirzah. The Hepher named in the census reappears as an ancestor in the line of Zelophehad and his daughters. The family count becomes the map that makes their story and inheritance claim legible.
