King James wording
King James Version
And those that were numbered of them were twenty and three thousand, all males from a month old and upward: for they were not numbered among the children of Israel, because there was no inheritance given them among the children of Israel.THE KEY
Here, being counted does not mean being allotted: the verse holds recognition and inheritance apart.
THE MEANING
Your being counted within a community and receiving its common inheritance are separate realities; one does not automatically guarantee the other. The verse holds both facts together: this group is enumerated, yet receives no share among Israel. Its distinct allotment does not make it absent from the count.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the assumption that being counted within a people necessarily means receiving the same material portion as everyone else.
THE ROOT
נַחֲלָה
naḥălāh
GROWS FROM
נחל
n-ḥ-l
To inherit or possess as an allotted share.
English can make inheritance sound like an abstract status, while this word carries the sense of a received portion. The verse distinguishes that portion from being counted: the Levites are enumerated, yet no inheritance is assigned to them among Israel.
ALSO GROWS
nāḥal: To inherit or take possession.
נָחַל
The verb gives the action beneath the noun: inheritance is a portion received or possessed.
naḥălāh: Inheritance, possession, or allotted share.
נַחֲלָה
This is the word used for what the verse says was not given to them among Israel.
הַפְּקֻדִים
happequdim
GROWS FROM
פקד
p-q-d
To attend to, take account of, muster, or appoint.
The Hebrew word for those numbered belongs to a root that also carries attending to and appointing. The count is therefore more than a bare total: it marks a group as accounted for, even while its inheritance remains distinct.
ALSO GROWS
pāqad: To attend to, muster, or appoint.
פָּקַד
This verb shows the wider range behind being numbered: taking account of a group can also mean assigning or attending to it.
mifqād: A mustering or numbering.
מִפְקָד
This noun makes the census sense explicit and keeps the verse’s count connected to the broader act of taking account.
THE PATTERN
A person’s inheritance can be distinct from the visible share held in common with others.
And the LORD spoke unto Aaron, You shall have no holding in their land, nor shall you have any portion among them. I am your portion and your holding among the children of Israel. Therefore Levi has no portion or inheritance with his brothers; the LORD is his inheritance, as the LORD your God spoke to him.into an inheritance that cannot be ruined, and cannot be stained, and cannot wither, kept in the heavens for you,THE THREAD
And the LORD spoke unto Aaron, You shall have no holding in their land, nor shall you have any portion among them. I am your portion and your holding among the children of Israel. Both verses use נַחֲלָה (naḥălāh), “inheritance.” Numbers 18:20 names the portion behind the absence in this verse: no share in the land, with the LORD named as Levi’s inheritance.
