This verse in the King James

King James wording
And thou shalt put some of thine honour upon him, that all the congregation of the children of Israel may be obedient.

What the KJV calls obedience begins as a whole community hearing and responding to honor visibly entrusted to its new bearer.

When responsibility moves to another person, honor is given to the next bearer so the whole assembly can hear and respond to that authority. It is a shared portion, so leadership appears as something entrusted and made visible.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the belief that a successor must manufacture authority alone: the verse shows honor being shared with him so the community can recognize and answer him.

יִשְׁמְעוּ

yishme'u

GROWS FROM

שׁמע

shama

To hear, listen, and heed; hearing can carry through to response.

“hear and respond” in this verse is yishme'u. The form translated “be obedient” is yishme’u, literally “they will hear.” The root can extend from hearing to heeding, so the verse presents the assembly’s response as something that follows what it hears and recognizes.

ALSO GROWS

shema: Hear; listen and respond.

שְׁמַע

This familiar form makes clear that hearing in the verse can include the response that follows.

shemu'ah: A report, tidings, or something heard.

שְׁמוּעָה

This branch connects the assembly’s response to what reaches its ears and is received.

וְנָתַתָּה

venatattah

GROWS FROM

נתן

natan

To give, set, or place.

“place” in this verse is venatattah. The verse’s “put” belongs to the root of giving and setting. What the successor carries is presented as a portion entrusted to him, not something he produces by himself.

ALSO GROWS

mattanah: A gift or present.

מַתָּנָה

The shared root frames the honor placed on him as something given.

mattan: A gift or bestowal.

מַתָּן

This branch underscores that the transfer of honor is an act of giving.

Authority takes public shape when it is entrusted and recognized, enabling a community to respond to its new bearer.

And the LORD made Solomon exceedingly great in the eyes of all Israel, and set upon him such royal majesty as had not been upon any king before him in Israel.
1 Chronicles 29:25 · SDVSolomon’s majesty is bestowed and made visible to the community, echoing honor entrusted to a new bearer.
These they stood before the sent ones, and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them.
Acts 6:6 · SDVThe community’s chosen servants are publicly presented and entrusted through the laying on of hands.
Do not let slip the gift of favor that is in you, which was given to you through prophesying, with the placing of hands by the council of elders.
1 Timothy 4:14 · SDVA gift and responsibility are received through a visible act of entrustment.
And Joshua the son of Nun was filled with the breath of wisdom, for Moses had leaned his hands upon him; and the children of Israel heard him and responded, doing as the LORD commanded Moses.
Deuteronomy 34:9 · SDV

The same ⁨שמע⁩ root behind “may be obedient” appears here as “hearkened.” The verse links honor entrusted to Joshua with the assembly’s hearing and response.
