King James wording
King James Version
Why should the name of our father be done away from among his family, because he hath no son? Give unto us therefore a possession among the brethren of our father.THE KEY
The daughters expose that the absence of a son is being treated as permission to subtract their father’s name from his family.
THE MEANING
This verse speaks to the fear that a person’s place in a family can disappear because the expected heir is absent. Here, the father’s name is his continuing identity within the family, and the possession is a concrete place among his brothers. The daughters’ request makes them carriers of that place.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A father’s place in the family must disappear if he has no son.
THE ROOT
יִגָּרַע
yiggāraʿ
GROWS FROM
גָּרַע
gāraʿ
To diminish, withdraw, or subtract.
“shaved away” in this verse is yiggāraʿ. The phrase rendered “be done away” carries the sense of being diminished or withdrawn from the family. The root makes the fear a matter of subtraction: her father’s name is being left out of the family’s continuing line.
ALSO GROWS
tigreʿu: To diminish or subtract.
תִּגְרְעוּ
The same root names subtraction from instruction; here, what the daughters fear being subtracted is their father’s place in the family.
tigreʿu: To reduce or withhold part of a required amount.
תִּגְרְעוּ
This usage makes the root’s sense of loss concrete: something due is reduced, just as the daughters fear their father’s name will be reduced from the family.
אֲחֻזָּה
ʾaḥuzzāh
GROWS FROM
אָחַז
ʾāḥaz
To grasp, hold, or take hold of.
“holding” in this verse is ʾaḥuzzāh. The word for possession grows from a verb meaning to hold. The daughters ask for a place they can hold among their father’s brothers, tying his continuing name to a real place in the family’s inheritance.
ALSO GROWS
ʾōḥezeṯ: Grasping or holding on to something.
אֹחֶזֶת
The verb’s physical sense of holding illuminates the request: the daughters seek a place within the family that can be held and continued.
ʾaḥuzzāh: A possession or estate in a land.
אֲחֻזָּה
The same noun names a concrete holding in the land, showing that the requested possession is an actual place of belonging.
THE PATTERN
A name persists when a living community carries a person’s place forward instead of letting it be erased.
And it shall be that the firstborn she bears shall rise up in the name of his brother who is dead, so that his name is not wiped out from Israel. Moreover, Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, I have bought to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead not be cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place. You are witnesses this day.The one who overcomes will be wrapped in white. I will never wipe his name from the scroll of life, but I will speak his name in agreement before the face of my Father, and before the face of his messengers.THE THREAD
Moreover, Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, I have bought to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead not be cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place. You are witnesses this day.The same Hebrew word שֵׁם (shem, “name”) appears in both verses. Ruth’s verse places the name upon the inheritance, echoing the daughters’ plea that their father’s name remain within the family and attached to a place carried forward.
