King James wording
King James Version
And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,THE KEY
The answer begins as a word before its content is disclosed.
THE MEANING
A response can begin before its full shape is visible: the LORD speaks, and the saying is still unfolding. The verse places you at that threshold, where the word has arrived but what it will open has not yet been voiced.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the idea that an answer is absent until every part of it is clear; the speaking itself is already underway.
THE ROOT
וַיְדַבֵּר
vayedabber
GROWS FROM
דבר
d-b-r
To speak or utter; its noun form can mean a word, matter, or thing.
“spoke” in this verse is vayedabber. The verb shares its three consonants with דָּבָר (davar), meaning “word” or “matter.” Before the answer is quoted, the verse shows the word itself arriving, the matter is already in motion.
ALSO GROWS
davar: Word; matter or thing.
דָּבָר
The shared root lets “speaking” and “the matter being spoken” remain joined in the verse.
dibber: To speak or declare.
דִּבֵּר
This verb form names the act underway: the LORD addresses Moses before the saying is disclosed.
THE PATTERN
A word arrives as direct address before its full consequence becomes visible.
After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, saying, Do not fear, Abram. I am your shield, and your very great wages. Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,And the messenger came in to her and said, Rejoice, you who have been highly favored, the LORD is with you. Well spoken of are you among women.THE THREAD
And the LORD spoke with Moses face to face, as a man speaks with his friend. And he turned again into the camp, but Joshua son of Nun, the young man who served him, did not leave the tent. The LORD’s “spake” here and in Exodus come from the same root, דבר (d-b-r), “to speak.” Exodus makes the character of that speech explicit: it is direct address, described as face-to-face conversation.
